k6ccc
Hi all,I have a pixel tree made up of 600 WS2811 "square pixel" nodes 5V from Ray Wu. When I built the tree several years ago, I did not order any spare pixels (my bad) and have not needed any until now. I had on my short list to order a string for spares if I placed an order from Ray, but did not otherwise need to order anything from him, so they never were ordered. I now have several failed pixels and am looking for some spares. If anyone has some available spares, I would be happy to buy a few. The pixels need to meet these criteria:Type: WS2811Voltage: 5 voltsColor order: RGBI should be able to deal with almost anything else (I think)... There are photos of some of the pixels part way down this page:http://newburghlights.org/pixel_tree.html Anyone have some????
k6ccc
Bump Anybody have any that they can spare? Please!
dgrant
I have the same ones here and I too don't have any spares. I might order some as I have one slightly defective one out of the 600 on my tree.
k6ccc
You got me all excited when Tapatalk went off on my phone. Then I read your message and realized that you are in the same boat that I am. This is my third year using these pixels for my pixel tree. I had not had any pixels fail until this year. I've had three fail where the string beyond the bad pixel was either dead or all white. Those I had to do something with right away. I have about 25 feet of 5V WS2811 pixel strip, but the color order is wrong (GRB instead of RGB). I cut out the bad pixel and replaced it with a single pixel of the strip and left it covered with electrical tape so it does not show. That leaves me with 3 dead pixels which most people don't notice until I point it out. I have one more that the Blue and Green stay on a little (maybe 10 - 20%) so it shows when it should be dark and the colors are off a bit. The colors off a bit is not a big problem, but the teal color when it should be off annoys me. I will swap out that one tomorrow evening.
k6ccc
As a followup, I received a PM from another forum member who had some. He sent me some pixels and I now have my pixel tree back to 100%

kzaas
I too have a pixel tree that I am very tired of repairing. I have replaced al least 75 pixels by now and that is not an easy task on a 20 foot tree. I am afraid to lower it to replace pixels just because that can cause more problems. It is a 1600 pixel tree and now it is unplugged. Ray is sending me new strings to replace what I have but I am down for the year(at least the tree is). I also am repairing strings that I bought last year which are the bullet style pixels. He advertises them as IP66 rated but even the fog affects them. He is only replacing the Technicolor ones which he says are reengineered due to the water problems people are having. We will have to wait and see. I just hope and pray that I don't have to go through this again next year. It is very depressing when you spend all that time building props only to have them fail at first rain. k6ccc
On one hand its easy for me to blame my pixel failures on rain (we've actually gotten some this year - which is welcome after 3 years of drought). However the bottom third of my pixel tree gets drenched every three days from the lawn sprinklers and only one of five failures are low enough that the sprinklers drench them. Kzaas, I would be pissed with 75 failures too! I timed it yesterday and it took about 20 minutes per node to replace each failed node + 20 minutes to get all the pieces, parts, and tools out and put back... kzaas
I live in central CA and yeah we finally got some rain. I hope that it is the water causing the problems because if it is just random failures of the LEDs or chips in the pixels that is worse. I can understand 4 or 5 out of 1600 but not as many as I have replaced. I also have another tree of 600 pixels that runs from my roof top to my fence and are the Technicolor pixels also and parts of those strings are off due to failed pixels and they are too high for me to reach with my ladders to replace them. That prop is not central in my display so I am still keeping it running. We need this rain desperately but cant it wait until after the season? I have two strands running in a bucket of water, they ran find all night, so far so good. Ray said that they've coated the PCB and applied clear glue around the wire entry points as well as the LED nubbin cover. My problem is that they new strands have 3 wire connectors (I forgot I has the "custom" SanDevices compatible 4 wire connectors) so I can't just plug them in. khawes
I've pulled my 15' tree down 3 times so far this season to repair pixels. I've got 4 bad strands right now so It will be coming down Sunday, This time I'll replace entire strands with the replacement Technicolor pixels form Ray. I'm not looking forward to removing 50 faceted covers, and replacing 100 zip ties per strand. My tree is build on 3/4" square aluminum tubing so taking it down doesn't flex the lights much. My Sunday plan is to replace the bad strings and then start on the others until I run out of time. Then finish the job on Tuesday during the next break in the rain. I'm hoping this will be the end of the replacements. Anyone else gotten replacements and if so how are they working out?
