Why don't I ever learn....

Winters here in MN last a looooong time. So when I can finally get the lights down I end up with a big ball of lights I throw in the garage because it's cold and I want to be outside for the shortest amount of time possible. I do this with the intention of untangling and organizing everything in the spring... Well, here it is fall again and I'm just now starting to untangle the big mess of lights trying to get them ready to put up again. This is what makes setup so daunting each year. Why don't I learn and just get them put away right each year so I can just setup when the time comes... Grrr... I am the king of all procrastinators!

May I suggest you reading your post when it comes time to take the lights down? LOL

I've been there many times myself. Eventually, I took the patience to store them properly while taking them down. Sure does make it easier for later.

If it make you feel better I do the same thing the only difference I have no excuse here in California.  Well I use the excuse of its 50 degrees out and I am over this holiday.  Likely more of the latter.  I love setting up for it but when Christmas is over I can't wait to take it all down and get it out of sight.  The next year I had wished I organized it and labeled it all better before putting it away.

When I was using LED strings, someone told me to roll each one up in a ball like yarn. It takes a little longer to do after the season, but it is a massive time saver when setup comes around. For mega trees, make sure the female end is on the outside. That way, hook that end to the topper and crank it up. The strings will unroll at your feet, I suggest spreading them out though. My last time, I had to roll them up again.

+1 on rolling the lights up in a ball.

Definitely the best light storage idea I've ever used.  Gets the max number of lights in the minimum amount of space while removing any remaining kinks, and keeps them neat.

Ron has an excellent point about thinking ahead how the lights will be used and which end you'll need first next year before balling them up.

are you asking for advice from someone who (for the fifth year in a row) has said he is going to be more organized next year and has just come in from hanging lights because too many neighbors were complaining about my cussing so loud???

:P

I don't have a problem with 40,000 plus lights. I have my wife do them at her leisure each day for a month until they are done. :)
