scrobbyd Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 I am Michelle, the wife in a newbie couple, and I need help clarifying our differing understandings of CCR vs RGB ribbons... At Christmas time I purchased the 2 controller starter package wit FM transmitter, and 5 sequences. About a week or so I purchased the package of 8 RGB ribbons with the CMB24 controller and 3 RGB flood lights. So here is my question that I've been unable to find a precise answer to. Are these RGB ribbons capable of being controlled as anything other than a dumb strip? Or can these be converted to use with DMX and control each pixel individually to function more like a CCR (smart strip)?? After LOTS of reading I still remain perplexed!
KStatefan Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 No. There is not a way to convert a dumb strip into a smart strip.
George Simmons Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 Have you tested the FM transmitter to make sure the signal reaches as far as the street? If not, you definitely need to - sooner rather than later. I'm unaware of any single product in this hobby with a poorer track record.
Ken Benedict Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 No. There is not a way to convert a dumb strip into a smart strip. But a smart strip can act just like a dumb strip.
KStatefan Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 But a smart strip can act just like a dumb strip. That is what I am doing with a prop next year, For me makes my setup easier.
dgrant Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 I just received 8, 16 foot dumb strips. Now have to figure out what to do with them! I have the controller from LOR for them and the power supply. Will still need to find an enlosure but that's easy. I've also got on order 14 smart pixel strings and a controller from Jushua1Systems. Just waiting on the pixels to arrrive so I can play with them.
kiplorenzo Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 (edited) I use the dumb strips as wash lights and mount them under my Eves at an angle facing the side of the house. Edited January 18, 2014 by kiplorenzo
dgrant Posted January 18, 2014 Posted January 18, 2014 I was thinking about putting them around the windows, in place of LED strings there now. The strings look less than nice too me since the bulbs are just laying whichever way they want and no real way to make them lay in one place. The RGB strips however, would mount easily. But, seven window frames across the front of the house and wiring them in RGB would require a lot of four-wire cables and distances become an issue from the controller. Could do indivual 3-channel controllers for each one, then just run DMX signal and power to all.
Max-Paul Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 But a smart strip can act just like a dumb strip. When did this happen Ken. Are you saying that if you turn all of the pixels on individually to the same color at the same time? Cause my first reaction, hence this post. Is that your saying that she can take a smart strip and install it on a 24 DC card that she just ordered. And I didnt see where she said what actual RGB strips she bought. I can only ASSUME that she is buying everything from LOR. In that case, I would think that she bought a CCR that would come with its own controller. And She or her husband didnt take the time to read all of our warnings in the past to stay away from the WHT that LOR sells.
tjflory Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 If you bought this package: http://store.lightorama.com/rgbstrip8pack.html As stated, they are dumb strips and cannot be converted to smart strips. tj

This was a response to post#2 as indicated in the Quote box, not to the Original Poster. You may have jumped to a wrong conclusion. On a smart strip, all pixels can be brought up to exactly the same RGB values and all pixels will look the same. Hence; a dumb strip.
Max-Paul Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 Ok, we are I think saying the same thing Ken. Well I be danged, LOR selling a kit with 8 dumb strips and a 24 channel D.C. card.. Ah everything is now becoming clear. Looks like I will need to check out the LOR store and see what other new goodies they have. Just to keep abreast of new items, new problems.
