drums114
Where does everyone buy bulk candy canes? I was going to the dollar store. 12 for a $1.
Surfing4Dough
Walmart after Christmas. 12ct for $0.98. Will be 50% off Thursday. If they have a ton, don't buy them yet since they will go lower yet. Not many people buy canes after Christmas (unlike decorations or even other candy). Within a week, they will likely go to 75% off. Shortly thereafter they will go 90% off. I got a couple thousand last year for $0.09 per box. I wouldn't hesitate to talk with the manager later this week and see if he will give him to you at a higher discount earlier once you explain what you are doing with them. They just want them gone, and they aren't very profitable for them regardless (and they know they won't go well otherwise).
drums114
Do candy canes stay good for a year? Do they go bad?
Orville
Do candy canes stay good for a year? Do they go bad?No they don't. I've had some Candy Canes before I was doing the LOR animated lighting that were well over 5+ years old. Opened a few up and ate them to make sure they hadn't gone bad. I think they are one of the few candies that will outlive a cockroach!
Surfing4Dough
They keep just fine. I would keep them in an air conditioned house (and not stored in a shed or attic where they get hot). I consolidated all mine into large boxes (took them out of 10 pk packaging). http://www.eatbydate.com/other/sweets/how-long-do-candy-canes-last/
drums114
Thanks! I am going to look for those 9 cent boxes!
Orville
Dollar stores got greedy! I always bought mine there every year, 100 mini candy canes for $1.00. This year, 65 mini's for a $1.00. 35 less than prior years, bulk amount goes down and price either remains the same or higher. I found the 100 ct. mini canes at Wal-Mart, but I refused to pay $2.49¢ per box for them! OUCH! Even they had them for slightly over a $1 last year, which wasn't bad, but $2.49¢ absolutely not. So we aren't giving anything out this year , I gave my last stockpile of them away last year in 2012, thinking I'd just replenish them in 2013 for at least close to the same price. Dave Batzdorf
I get mine at Spangler. You can get the by the box. I usually order them in Oct/Nov time frame.... http://www.spanglercandy.com/candy-store/traditional-candy-canes
rainyoregonchristmas
Candy Canes DON'T keep in Oregon. Our higher humidity make them weep and soften in just a month or two. Unless you vacuum seal them, they'd be one of those "Thanks, but no thanks" give-away items.
Dave Batzdorf
I do have to admit a few were soft, but I munched on them thru out the season....
Orville
Guess it depends on where you live, or how you store them. Mine are kept in a dark drawer specifically set aside for candy canes and other hard candies. They seem to keep very well inside the wooden drawers forever here in Florida, or at least in my region of Florida.
George Simmons
Surf's got the best idea. Been doing it like that for years. I figure at less than a penny apiece, it costs far less each year than even one controller. The first year we did the mini canes but felt it was too chintzy, so we went up to the regular size. We empty the boxes also and store them in 32Qt tubs. So far this year we've gone through three full tubs and that's a slow year by historical standards. We've got three Wally Worlds within comfortable driving distance. And if you've got cash, Target is an option also. We've gotten canes from both. Our success rate getting mgrs. to exceed the current clearance discount has been dismal so far. The boxes have expiration dates on them. We're dispensing the last of the 2014's right now. This year's should be at least 2016 expiration. Agree that a controlled storage environment is critical for longevity.
drums114
Yeah I gave out the full size ones this year from the dollar store (12 of them for $1). I am going to check out walmart at the end of the week when they are more than 50% off.
drums114
Got my 96 boxes of candy canes . 1,152 candy canes! https://scontent-b-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn1/1010538_647973278600810_1868413640_n.jpg Thanks for the advise, I waited for the 75% off and asked the manager and he brought them down to 15 cents! I got them in my basement right now. Its always cool down there. I plan to leave them int he box and sealed so they don't crack. They seem good and sealed to me. https://www.facebook.com/ChristmasLightsOnWalnutRd
