Recording at night

i did a trial recording of one of my sequences the other night and the quality wasn't all that great.  i am using a jvc everio gz-ms130, it's not hd, so i'm not expecting hd quality.

my problem is the picture will be ok, then get grainy or give me a halo effect. i had the camera on a tripod at the end of my drive way.  if i recall, i did not have the light on, i did not zoom in, i allowed everything to be in the camera view.  i previously did a small video on the first night of the display with my iphone 5, and it turned out better.  granted it's a hd camera, i did't get the weird lighting problems like i did with my jvc.  but i think i might have had the light on on the iphone, i can't remember.

next time, i'm going to move father back, probaby across the street in my neighbors drive way and try it.  when you record, where are you in relation to the display, what's your typcial setting?  do you record at dusk, or when it's completely dark?

I have about a 20 minute window at dusk and dawn just before it gets dark where the sky is a medium blue.  If the sky is black it's no good.  As for the camera, there are some links on the forum that can explain better than I but you have to be able to manually control the camera settings including manual zoom.

It takes me about 10 shots before I get enough good video, hence the reason I have not posted videos for a few years.
