Fm transmitter

All the Black Box items are sold out on the site............so I just ordered the  CZH05B amazon.

I just ordered one as well. I am really glad I found this post because I was very close to buying LOR's transmitter, and I had just assumed it was good.

OK folks,

I bought an FM transmitter from a China eBay dealer. It has inputs for both line input and one for mic input. I also ordered a cable to plug from the sound card on the laptop to the FM transmitter.

It worked well until one day I wanted to show my sister in law our Halloween show and there was no sound from the radio.

I checked the transmitter and it appears to be still transmitting.

There is no sound out of the laptop, although you can still see the VU meters on the output dancing. No, it isn't the mute button.

It is a SONY Vaio laptop. I think I blew the sound card.

Has anyone experienced this before?

Anyone got any ideas?

If you unplug the audio cable from the headphone jack to the transmitter do the speakers work? You do have it plugged into the headphone jack and not the Mic or Line jack, right?

If you plug another audio source into the transmitter do you hear anything?

If you plug headphones into the laptop do you hear anything?

Perhaps delete the sound card from device manager and let it be rediscovered?

I unplugged the cable from the headphones jack and no sound is out of the speakers.

The laptop has a headphones out and a mic in jack. Only 2 jacks and there is no line out.

You can tell when the FM transmitter is on as the radio becomes quiet. I need to find another sound source to check the transmitter.

I believe it is working. The transmitter looks similar to the CZH05B amazon.

But when I unplug the cable from the computer, the computer speakers do not play.

The VU meter on the computer display dances but no sound. No sound in any audio file on the laptop.

I will try to uninstall and reinstall the sound card.

I will also try headphones.

But I'm afraid to try my other laptop and plug it in the transmitter only to have it blow the sound output...

Thank for the tips.

Open the speaker icon on the task bar and see if you have it muted, although the icon should show that already. Open the mixer controls in the software, depending on what OS you are using to see if the slider controls are down for the sound output.

Bill,

The transmitter only recieves signal from the laptop and nothing goes back so it shouldn't be the cause of laptop problems. If you have silence on the FM channel of a radio with your transmitter on, then it sounds like the transmitter is working. If you heard fuzzy static noise, then there might be a problem with the transmitter.

Sounds like your laptop has an audio problem.

To isolate the transmitter, get another "portable radio", "I-Pod" or "CD player" with a headphone jack and plug the transmitter into that. Put the portable radio on a different frequency used in your area  (or just play the CD player/I-Pod). With the other stereo keyed into the transmitter's frequency/channel, you should hear the sound that the portable radio/device is sending out thru the transmitter.

Hope I didn't confuse on this.

Tom

You might also click the Start button and type "sound" (no quotes though) in the Search box. In the results under Control Panel there is probably a Sound app that will let you check and set the sound card settings. Depending on your actual sound device (could be built-in to the motherboard or an add-on card) there might be it's own program to set the sound configuration. It's possible the sound has been routed to another output such as an HDMI output or something like that.

Let me ask, does your laptop made sound/music when it first boots up? Did it used to before if it doesn't now?

No sounds during bootup.

Not sure if it sounded before. I don't use it much and my wife only uses it for email.

I'll try to uninstall/reinstall the sound card.

But I suspect an output transistor or integrated circuit is fired on the sound card.

I'll check with headphones. It definitely is not muted as I checked the obvious.

Thank you for the suggestions.

  Bill,

You may want to re install the drivers for your sound card as well. This has happened to me. The driver re install is an easy fix.

Folks,

I checked the transmitter with my iPod and it works fine, just like I thought.

And then I plugged in some headphones and had sound out of the laptop.

I fiddled some more and got sound out of the laptop speakers.

It doesn't appear to be real loud even with the settings maxed out but it is there.

I can even get it to play through the FM transmitter.

So the morale of the story is to not give up and fiddle some more, especially while running a Windows machine.

Thanks to all for the tips and tricks.

I have to get my butt in gear to get even a quarter of a decent display as compared to some of your awesome displays...

I used a cheap China transmitter bought off ebay for the first couple of years.  This year I learned about the VAST transmitter on another site.  I purchased one from another member and its a great little unit.  Has RDS built in.  Is USB driven.  Works way better than my other one, which I will keep as a back up.  Check out VAST transmitters: http://www.vastint.com/product/V-FMT212R_HiFi_FM_transmitter_RDS_HiFi-FMT-RDS.html

I just bought what I thought was a CZH-05B (that's what the box even says) but the actual unit says Sain Sonic AX-05B. Does anyone know if these are one in the same? It was about $58 with free express shipping (ebay).

My little FM transmitter works fine.

I need to take the radio further away as it is really nearby.

My wife tuned to the station I was running for our Halloween display and heard it fine from the road and the driveway on the car radio.

I orginally bought the FM transmitter to use if and when I decide to do a pyromusical display (shooting fireworks timed to the music).

Most pyro musicals suck as you have to lug around a heavy PA system, amplifier, speakers, etc. And then the noise from the fireworks drown out the music anyway.

With an FM transmitter, the crowd is a safe distance away from the display and they can tune to their own boombox or listen in their cars.

They can hear the music better, it makes for a better display, and forget about the bulky PA equipment and speakers.

My FM transmitter has a jointed extendable antenna such as this model:  http://www.amazon.com/CZE-AX-7C-Transmitter-Station-Antenna/dp/B008BF9B1A/ref=pd_sim_sbs_e_6

The antenna droops and needs Viagra!

Actually, I wanted an extension so I could mount the antenna on an external pole for a longer range but will live with what I have right now.

I bought a small Seahorse case and I use that to store the FM transmitter, cables, antenna, and power supply when not in use.

I plucked out the foam cubes to fit everything and it cushions and protects my equipment.

It makes it easy to store and I have everything I need to set up and plug into my laptop.
