It is almost done! Bob-O Ready for mapping?

Here is a project that I am fixing up for New Years.. but I am looking to put it in my Christmas Display if I can find a spot for it and figure out the programming.. LOL

1500 RGB pixels spread over 15 universes of DMX.  The board is a custom 16 universe board from my friends at Kiboworks.   E1.31 input to the special protocol for these pixels.   LOR talks to it just fine...  But the programming is what I need to figure out now.. phew!

The skin is Stainless Steel.

Damn, so you going to drop the ball on the west coast I see.

Posted (edited)

Actually, I dropped a cube on the west coast in 2008-2009.  (first ever on the west coast we believe.  It was a lot of firsts actually).  The city of Sacramento wanted nothing to do with it the following year because it was so sucessful.  (yeah.. go figure)  The people that had us do it expected 3k people and got 25k people.  City was pissed apparently and wanted to charge the businesses that put it together some 6 figure sum for security.  They told the city to pound sand.. so to speak.

So, I am looking for a place to drop this one this year.. so far only at my house!   LOL

Factoid:

This ball is 5' in diameter which is one foot smaller than the Time Square Ball we built for the 100th anniversary drop.  That was the first LED TSB.

The current TSB is 12' in diameter.  It was a lot of fun working on it 6 years ago.   This year will be its sixth year in operation.   It was designed for 5 years only, but still going strong.

That looks pretty cool without even being powered up!!

Thanks Shubb... I will post video when we get it put together.  We are actually working on it today

LOL... Well you said you wanted to map it!     There are 25 pixels per triangle and there are 100 pixels per universe.  The top is always the same. The front is subject to how I place it.  I have to play with it a bit to get a better idea.  We just did a complete hardware change so I need to make sure about what is what then I will get back to ya.

It does not spin.. that would be possible with some slip rings, but I think I won't go there!  ha ha.  Eventually I want to put a wireless hub inside and an antenna out the top.  Then all I need is power on a cord.. and it could be battery powered if I wanted it to be.. and if I was willing to waste a lot of $$ on batteries.  1000 watts of power total when on full white.. give or take a bit.

Sounds interesting but the links are not working.

They are links to his Dropbox.  You might have to have one to see the pictures.

The limit on the forum would only allow one pic.

Try again. It stopped working for an hour or so.

You should not need a Dropbox acct to see them

Holy cow, that looks like a weekend or two or three........

Very cool. 10 or so more and you can hang them on a tree (or just one in my front yard). lol

appears to be a dodecahedron with each of the 10 pentagons sub dived into 5 equilateral triangles.

The pixel pattern seems to be irregular too. Tech drawings?

Thanks for sharing that with us. That is out of controll! all I can say is wow. how much does that weight? can't wait to see it in action

Yeah... what he said!

I will see if there are drawings I can get a hold of.  I bought this shell from my friends I used to work with at LED Effects.. I am rehabbing it and modifying it to work on DMX.. and adding the power supplies and so on.  I was not the one that actually built the thing from scratch.... I didn't see any need to build one from scratch since this one was just sitting there.. :P

It is my pleasure to share..  I will have video of some sort next week if all goes well.  I don't have much programmed for it but I can make the colors move around a bit.   I am not sure of the weight but I am guessing around 200-300lbs.  Myself and to others can pick it up... just not for a long time.  Fits in the back of my pickup on that stand.

Wow!!   I can picture this  running along an arc on the St Louis arch at night...

If you define a matrix with the number of strings and nodes on those strings you can use xLights/Nutcracker to create effects. you wont be able to do text without and exact model, but you can do Twinkle, Strobe, butterfly, fire, bars. well just try. many should look cool.

thanks
