Virginia Mini on Saturday May 18

Recommended Posts

Just under three weeks until the Virginia Mini On Saturday May 18.  We will start with an informal meet and greet at 11:00AM.  If you want to get there prior to that we will be starting setup at about 10.  We will have lunch at 12:00.

Everyone should bring some food to share with the group.  We will provide drinks and paper goods.  At about 1:00 we will start with introductions of everyone.

We want to allow time for everyone attending to introduce themselves and tell us about their favorite display element. We want to give you a heads up so you can prepare to either bring the element or take pictures or videos of it and describe the details of how you built it and how it works.  This could take some time, but we'll all learn so much more!  Anything from your display that you would like to share with the group.  Talk about why it is special to you, or why you made it, how you made it or anything you want to share about it.  There is always a story to tell.

The event will be held at Glen Allen Baptist Church located at 3018 Mountain Road in Glen Allen, VA 23060.   Glen Allen is located on the north side of Richmond.  There will be a nominal $5 per person charge to cover the building rental fee.

The minis are an excellent opportunity to meet with other Christmas lighting enthusiasts to share ideas, design plans, implementation, sequencing or just to meet others with the same goals in Christmas lighting displays.

Al Thompson and I are looking forward to seeing everyone at the mini.

Are Halloween decorators welcome?  ;)  Halloween is my main focus, but I did start doing a Christmas display this past holiday season. Also, do you expect many people to attend? I'm almost 2 hours away in Herndon (near Dulles airport). This sounds like a good time, especially since I've never had the opportunity to meet any other LOR users. It's all been learn as you go for me!

Mike,

Come on down.  We are expecting about 20 or so attendees.  We have several LOR users that will be attending as well as several that have DIY setups.  A fair number of Christmas decorators also do Halloween.  Bring something about your Halloween display for show and tell.  It wil be a good opportunity for you to meet some other LOR users.

I'm in Chesapeake and thinking of going, but not sure I will be digging stuff out of storage. Would be nice to be able to talk to others and learn not to make the same mistakes.

Looks like I will be in town and would love to attend, seems like there will even be a few enthusiasts from around the local area.

Please pencil me in.

Regards,

Mike

Come on anyway.  Good opportunity to see how others do their displays.

We have several great demonstrations lined up so far.

Roger Forbes will be bringing his LED tester to demonstrate.  He will also bring a set of parts to show how to put a tester together.  He will also bring a couple of relay box units to show us how to make a device to cut off your static display during the LOR show.

Charles Kerr will bring a small 2801/2811/2812/GE Color Effect DMX pixel controller he designed/built, a low cost usb dongle, and the software he wrote for the Mac OSX to run and visualize a show (currently sequenced with LOR S3).

Rich Fennig will be bringing some DIY equipment to demonstrate.

If anyone else has things they want to show off please bring them to the mini.

Just 2 days until the Virginia mini.  Things are shaping up for another excellent day with fellow Christmas enthusiasts.

The entrance to the room we will be using is on the left side of the church.

Since my props are too big to bring with me, I'll bring "virtual" props via my laptop. I'll have all of my sequences and visualizations, plus videos and pictures of my displays. See y'all tomorrow!

Oh, and I've started using Papagayo for lip synching my new sequences. I'm no expert with it, but I can show it to anyone who's interested.

A BIG thank you Andy and Al for pulling this together!  :D  It was great getting to meet everyone, see video of some of your displays, and see what everyone is working on. I definitely got some ideas --- we'll see if I can put any of them into action for this year's shows.

If you find yourself in the Herndon area (near Dulles aiport) in October, swing by to see the Chaos Crypt. It'll be up and running the entire month of October.

In the meantime, if you want to see more of my Halloween display, search for "barskywi" on YouTube and you should hit my YouTube Channel.
