Splitting icicle lights

Does anyone know if you can split the led icicle light strings into 2 at the half way point like you could the ican icicle strings? Trying to decide how many to order for next year.

Thanks

Wayne

I've cut several regular led strings and may not be in the middle of the string. You look for where there is only two wires between two bulbs instead of three and cut there.

Not advisable, unless you know your electronics and electrical stuff.

I will pretend like I did not see this post

Thanks, That is what I was thinking that there would be a 120 volt pair running thru

I do the opposite. I make 320 light Icicles.

I connect 4 sets of 70 together.

I always plug it in and touch the bare wires to my tongue, to make sure there is current first.

now that there is pretty darn funny. i dont care who you are. :)

I'm pretty sure that was meant tongue in cheek, pun intended. But I agree. Don't use your tongue to test for current. That's what the dog is for. Again, kidding.

But won't the led strings fail faster because they are designed for a certain draw with a certain numbers of bulbs? I don't cut or splice anything because I'm not very electronically edumacated.

However, I do know that 4 strings of 70 lights isn't 320. It's, um, more. Wait! Less! It's less! ;)

He's doing the "new math". And after the shock on the tongue it probably looks like 320!! :P According to my trusty abacus, it is only a mere 280 lights.

The LED strings I own don't have any place with only 2 wires except at the ends. There are components in the middle shared with both half strings.

I would like to say it was real late when I posted that, but 9 pm isn't late so I can't use that excuse. Maybe my math failed because I was laughing as I typed that out.

Anyway, to your question:

"But won't the led strings fail faster because they are designed for a certain draw with a certain numbers of bulbs?"

The icicle light strings are basically 2 circuits of 35 lights. 2*35 = 70 lights. (I'm all over it now!)

Instead of plugging the sets together and having 3-4 separate sets. I cut the plugs off the ends and solder and heat shrink the wires to make

"Super sets" of 280 lights (right again, woo hoo!)

It just makes it easier to put them up on the house, and one less connection to allow water to get in.

I convert all my light strings to full wave so while I have the ends cut off, to add the diodes and resistors, (I DO NOT touch to my tongue, that was a joke, but if you are that dense to believe it, you SHOULD touch wires to your tongue)

I don't see the point of making them all separate strings again.

I will add that certain strings do have the resistors in the plug ends, so you need to be careful, and know the strings you are dealing with.
