Does any one has a display that is a little ways from the road?

My house is about 250 feet from the road... Would that effect people coming by to see it? I live in a small town and my house is in the woods part of it. So it only has like a 275 feet gap to view the lights before seeing just trees. I was wondering if anyone else's display was similar and if it effected how people came by to see it.

And not only that my road is curvy and it doesn't have very many houses on it so card just zip through there all the time. I'm just curious to see how people would stop to watch with out getting in people's way.

Do you own the property all the way up to the road? Seems like it would be best to create a display closer to the road that doesn't involve the house (although you could ligtht up the house too if you wanted. You're talking about the length of a football field, which will certainly be visible, but nobody's going to pick out details from that distance...

If you build it, they will come.

Putting it near the road may provide better shows for the spectators, but you have to think about the power distribution.

All this from a newby that hasn't even bought a controller yet. Good question though.

The lot looks like a perfect canvas for a display. Like I said above, I'd only use the house as a background element, not the central part of the display.

If possible, do consider having a small gravel pad for off-street parking.

Seems like you have a lot of possibilities. You might want to trench some power nearer to the road so you don't have to run a lot of heavy-duty cords back to the house.

sheldon,

let me give you some experienced advice. where i live i have a 400' driveway from the road. i also have a creek and trees that curve around my land. we live on a pretty busy road and cars slowing down to see your display can become a big issue. i decided 2 years ago that i would put a small parking pad down by my bridge for people to come on in and listen to the radio and enjoy as long as they wanted. well i've run into a nice problem. i've had so many people that visited my display this year that i'm already planning on expanding my pad to fit more cars. it has been a wonderful experience to be able to go out and say hello to the many people that were nice enough to come see my work. you will be surprised how many more people will stop if they know they don't have to worry about traffic.

i think you have a nice set-up to your yard but just imagine how cool it could be to have your display surround folks as they come in. use the things around the parking area a parts of your display.

my set-up is just a gravel area with lights on candy canes so people know where to park. its really cool to look out the window and see lights on the cars as they enjoy your display. i even have plans to incorporate the items around my pad into my display. i.e. trees, bushes, display items, as well as i want to put a snow machine in a tree to add to the excitement.

you may want to put gravel into you 2013 christmas display list.

hey sheldon,

i would love to put some pics on here but i can't figure out how to do it.

send me your email and i'll send a few of how mine is set-up.

i'm kinda of lucky though. i have a really long and open yard. my wife and members of my family have asked why i don't have any more trees in my yard and i tell them if i put trees in the yard then that more things in the way of seeing the house at christmas.

i would rather spread out around my house and yard so there is more for people to see then have more trees in front of my house. more grass to cut in the summer but much better for christmas.

if anyone can tell me how to post pics then i will gladly put them on my next post.

thanks

Well. So I am looking at the pictures in the order you have them posted. My thoughts as I go through the pics... "oh that's nice" "He is far off the road" "simple design" and then the last photo appears and I say in my thoughts "HOLY MACKEREL" Awesome job!

thanks alot. i really appreciate the positive comment.

surprisingly i only have 48 channels. on the left side of the yard 12 of the channels are for the arches. the posts on the porch take up 8 channels. its really amazing how you can tie different items together to the same channel and really look alot bigger than you are.

i really like the set-ups that have 100-200 channels that can control everything but its just kind of tough for me to swallow buying a $250 controller to just connect 1 or 2 strings of lights to a channel.

i love looking back at previous set-ups and really seeing how the display grows from year to year.

now i just need to learn alot more about rgb and start adding that to my display. guess i need to start saving my pennies.

any questions please let me know. i'm still somewhat new but i am still glad to help in anyway i can.

thanks
