Guest wbottomley
What damage has this latest Winter storm done to your display? I'm seeing quite a few talking about shutting down for the year. For me, the rain is more of a nuisance than the wind and/or snow.

Mark J. M.
In Oregon we have had a series of heavy rain storms come through this month. Finally had the wind to go with it and the wind knocked down my mega tree, pulled three guy stakes out of the ground, also all the yard decorations were pushed over. The rain has just made my yard a bog. I just got the parts to the mega tree cleaned up and will try to return the yard to normal. I hope the rain stops for a week or so to let the ground dry out. Otherwise I may take everything down for the year.
JeffF
One blowup got gutted, a few strands have smacked hard enough into each other to break bulbs, and many, many lights are having water enter their sockets and then freeze and then break one or both leads.Other than that, we've been pretty lucky so far. Supposed 40-50MPH winds last night but I buttoned everything up so not much from that.Keeping my finger's crossed for tomorrow which is supposed to be windy again... iflights
I lost a power supply due to the cold. It's 23 degrees here today, not the coldest it has been, but too cold today for the little guy it seemed. Pulled out the backup and put it into service. The show must go on. The inlaws come on Monday!
TGabriel
Had to change out a ELL (install spare unit) do to water getting inside of it. Dry it out and got it working again, will seal the antenna tomorrow.
Papa6058
60 Mile an hour winds here, my 15' PVC spiral mega tree was planted half on my roof with about 5 breaks. I took it off the house (it was not on the roof before the wind) and ran it laying down one night, everyone still loved it! Now I have a 10' PVC spiral tree. Next year going with 4" steal pipe and stainless steel guide wires.Michael
big_dog_501
My 20ft. mega tree came down in the high winds in Charlotte today. It landed about 5ft. from the house I am going to have to re-think my wire support system. I have tested all of the lights and repaired a few strings. I'll get it back up but for now I have a nice pattern of lights blinking on the ground.
ItsMeBobO
The big show in my area lost his 28' mega in the big wind storm. He is not LOR or a member here so I am posting his loss. My show was out for a few hours but I did not lose anything. St Louis MO
scubado
I'm seriously thinking of pulling out my large corner bush this Spring, it keeps laying down on the job. Either that or try viagra fertilzer. With it gone gives me more lights for something else and new landscaping project with RGB lighting. Max-Paul
Well I had some damage but will take this into account for next year and upgrade some hardware. Note the plastic stakes that come with lighted candy canes sold at walmart do not hold up well to 50 or higher wind. Got do a better job of knocking in the bottom post for a 6' spiral tree (ground was really hard due to this past summer's dry spell. First year with the mega tree. Didnt fall down, but the strings are on air craft cables with S hooks. Wind will whip them hooks out of the holes they are in. And I need better anchors to hold the hula hoop that the strings are attached to. Got some 3/8 rebar and sunk them about a foot into the ground and then tied the candy canes to the rebar. Put in a few more anchors and tied the hula loop for the mega tree to them. Got some 40lb test nylon string/twine and tied the mega tree strings to the hula loop.Show went on and no one is the wiser tonight. But looked like crap last night. Too cold and to windy, and I needed to buy the rebar and twine on the way home from work tonight.

LORi P
Yes Lori, Barry's place on Ladue road.I think he jinxed himself..... At the SLAM, he was adamant that I would not need any guy wires for my mega tree b/c he had never had any problem with his because the base was set in the ground in 3 feet of concrete. I am sorry to hear that his luck ran out.
cenote
Just a few things blew over, and my century tree pole somehow dropped deeper into the ground (by 18"). Can't figure that one out, except groundhogs!
Bob Hall
The wind blew a outdoor chair over onto the cat 5 input cable that was hanging from the window going into my first controller. It ended up pulling the cat 5 jack mostly off the board. I found a long enough phone cord thankfully that will work. I don't think the mini mp3 controller likes it. I've seen noticeable lag that I haven't had with the cat5. Guess I'll have to send the controller back to LOR after the season. Jerry
Our mega tree suffered some damage from the wind last night ( 50 mph gusts). At first I thought the the winch cable broke , but later found the cable just pulled right through the 2 cable clamps. Spent all day in the wind untangling 33 RGW super strings and 2 strobe strings , replaced about 50 broken bulbs and 1 split socket . Didn't get it back up yet , still have some more inspecting to do. Just wrote an animation sequence to test with tomorrow before winching it back up. Everything else seems to be OK.
