Neither rain, nor snow, nor....

Last night and all day today we have had 30-40 mph sustained winds. When I left for work, two trees in the yards had blown over. They have 1/2" steel rods in the ground and up the center of the tree. The rods were bent... nearly 90 degrees.

Then when I got home, 6 more were down and the octagon base of the megatree was busted. So I re-staked one tree and fixed the base of the mega tree, and re-secured it. Then I called it a night. It was too cold and I did not have it in me to fix the rest of the trees. So I am just letting the show run as-is.

There has been a steady stream of cars tonight! Pretty much always one or two cars, sometimes as many as 5! People seem to be enjoying it anyway. I figure I could save a lot of work next year and put little piles of lights everywhere instead of putting out the trees. :)

I feel your pain...

sorry that you are having a rough time with your display....

But 1/2" steel rods.... how could that not be enough? Sheesh.....

My first year with Mr. Christmas I used some piddley text stakes, and went out the next day and everything had fallen over. I live in a very windy spot. So now I ise the steel rod inside the 'trunk' of every tree.

Rebar is mild steel. Its meant to bend. Might try steel t-posts, the kind used for barbwire. Should be a little more stout.

Same thing happened here yesterday. 40mph winds. Star with base fell down from top of the house lol. Just one broken c9 on roof line. I even drilled the base to the house!

Merry Christmas

Same here...Wasn't expecting many people due to the icy roads/conditions but had a surprising turnout

Sounds like you might be a candidate for the JimSwinder club. lol

It doesn't sound like the damage is too bad, hope you can get it all back in order soon.

Oh my gawd, when can we take "JimSwinder" out of the holiday lexicon?

The poor guy had a bad day last year, and it's over now... can we just let it go? =D

it's NEVER over...the Winder Curse lives on and on...

People become legends for a variety of reasons - both positive and not so positive.

Legends don't create themselves - they're born from others telling and retelling the tale until it becomes part of the lexicon.

For reasons most people would prefer to avoid (including very likely he, himself), Jim is on his way to infamy.

Who around here DOESN'T think his name whenever any headline includes the words "roof" and either "tree" and/or "fall"?

I rest my case.

60 Mile an hour winds here, my 15' PVC spiral mega tree was planted half on my roof with about 5 breaks. I took it off the house (it was not on the roof before the wind) and ran it laying down one night, everyone still loved it! Now I have a 10' PVC spiral tree. Next year going with 4" steal pipe and stainless steel guide wires.

Keep this up guys and the rest of us are going to feel like we are doing something wrong if we don't end up in the "Jimswinder club" ;)
