Polarity needs to be correct.

Wbottomley - question is how do i do that. The green wire with grooves on the side (earth) should touch the side of the bulb or the bottom tip of the bulb?

Just a little to keep in mind. When working with SPT wire. The side with the groves can be either hot or neutral. Depends on how you install it in the plug that will go to the outlet. Now lets apply a little common sense. Which do you think will be safer? If the side terminal in the socket or the tip at the bottom is the one that is hot and could electrocute you? If you said the side, lets consider this. While putting in or taking out a lamp. There is a chance of making contact with threaded part of the bulb, which is hot. So you want to put the hot lead on the tip on the bottom of the socket where the chance of making contact with it is almost nil.

Hope that this was of some help.

Typically the standard is smooth (often with embossed writing) is hot, grooved is neutral.

Thanks Tim, was thinking this, but was not sure. Just as long as I settle on one or the other and always do the same, all is good.
