Serious Noob Questions (Serious to me anyway)

So I've been trying to work on my first song in the sequence editor. (see attached)

I'm sure I'm doing something wrong because every time I try to make an adjustment, I have to restart the entire song and try to see where the beats are to mark off. Its made it extremly time consuming.

I've tried the play range but when I try it the song it out of sequence. There must be a better way to distinguish the specific beats for a song and focus on editing specific areas without retarting the entire song.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If you have a Basic Plus or higher license level, you can use the Beat Wizard to locate the beats for you. It will mark off the beats for you, and you can even tell it to put a mark in every, for example, 4th cell.

You can use the space bar to stop/start the sequence from your current location, eliminating the need to go back to the beginning.

It also sounds as if your file may not be a Constant Bit Rate (CBR) MP3 file. You may want to run the file through Audacity in order to convert it to the CBR format. 99.9% of the time this resolves issues with the timings not lining up in the same place each time you run the file.

Take a look at this PDF from LOR for help with Audacity.

Great idea thanks Don! Yes I have the advanced level so that would explain why nothing happened when I selected beat mode.

I did the beat converter and using the spacebar to go back worked for a bit but it didn't take long for the song to stop syncing up properly unless I started from the beginning. Its always about 2 seconds faster than it should be unless I start the song over completly. Its frustrating as heck.

I know what you mean......I had the same issue until I found the post about using Audacity and converting the output to 128 bit rate.

.wav file is my favorite format and resolved all my out of synch issues I had after stopping and resuming play while working on a sequence. Good Luck.

I use 192k and CBR, the only time I have ever had a song get out of time is due to it being a VBR {variable bit rate} which plays havoc in the Sequence Editor. If they are still having problems with the music going out of time, chances are it HAS NOT been properly converted to a CBR {Constant Bit Rate} format.

I've actually had that happen a couple of times during my conversions, thought I had it set to CBR {that is I thought I had unchecked VBR option}, but didn't. Then when working on the song, out of time it went. And when verified, sure enough, it was still in VBR format. Always recheck the music/song after conversion to be certain it is in the correct format for the SE to handle it.

Like stated I use 192k {just sounds a lot better to me, 128k just doesn't sound all that great in my opinion} and CBR and I have had no issues with timings or lag times in the SE at all using those.

Quick question. How do you save an animation? I've been recreating it for each song.

Quick question. How do you save an animation? I've been recreating it for each song.

  • Open an existing sequence.
  • Click "Edit -> Export/Import Channel Configuration -> Export Channel Configuration."
  • When prompted, enter a filename for your template.
  • Click "File -> New" and create a new musical (or animation) sequence.
  • Look for the section called "Use a saved channel configuration template" and use the "..." button to chose the template you created in steps 1 and 2.
  • Once you click okay, your new sequence is ready to go with your information already filled in for you.

You can also open a sequence and click "Edit -> Export/Import Channel Configuration -> Import Channel Configuration." to do the same thing.
