ShellNZ
Hello all Just popping in to introduce myself. Im from NZ and have just purchased the LOR 16-chan starter kit with Standard version of software, 1 deluxe 16-con DC card and an enclosure. Had the starter one converted to 240V.Its still winging its way here so till it gets here will have a play with the software. No idea how many lights I have, going to do an inventory this weekend. My neighbour has LOR and many lights so threw me a couple of solar ones last year and thats what got me going, I was like a demented woman on a rampage for the months of Nov/Dec buying and making things. So this is only my 2nd year of doing Xmas lights.I know the motto here is walk before you run but Im fairly confident (IT tech) so Im gonna start with attempting to make my own sequence to the new song "Back in Time" by Pitbull. I have bought LED Neon-Flex to make some faces and will be putting them on 7mm plywood painted matt black.I will be starting with making the faces do the basic chorus words, then moving on to make all the rest of my lights do stuff, then if I still have time going back to the faces and making them do more. The 240V 16-chan will do all my NZ lights, the DC card will just do the faces alone as they will be 12v.Let the games begin

Guest guest
Welcome to the madness.I might suggest you think about going ahead and upgrading your license to Advanced. It opens up a lot more features in the software, not only that, if you start finding you need to expand your display with more controllers, the Advanced will allow you a lot more possibilities, as it has unlimited in controllers and tracks.Aslo the Basic license only supports a maximum of 2 controllers, some folks usually end up with more than that, I actually started with the Basic Plus, which is 4 controllers, but found out real quick I needed the Advanced license, as before I was finished with my first year, 5 controllers/80 channels. Also the Basic or lower licenses I don't believe will allow you to load in a sequence that was created on an Advanced licensed computer that uses multiple tracks{more than 2}, I share my sequences, and most are anywhere from 9-13 tracks, a Basic only supports 2 tracks, Standard up to 4 tracks, but Advanced is unlimited tracks. Not saying you definitely need to get an Advances License, but in doing so, you will open up a lot more possibilities with what you can do with the Sequence Editor and your display. Not to mention use and edit other folks sequences for your display options. It's how I started, and was the best way I learned how the software worked was by using others sequences and moving things around.Again, welcome and have fun. ShellNZ
Many thanks At this stage I have the Standard license which supports 8 controllers, 4 tracks. That will probably do for now for my very first go at music lights, hehe. If I find I cant do some things tho I will definately upgrade, US$40....pfft a drop in the bucket to what I have spent thus far lol

scubado
Until your post, I hadn't heard of led neon-flex rope, so I googled it. Looks pretty cool. How does it compare in brightness to Incad rope or regular led rope?Welcolcome to the madness! Don't forget to stock up on extension cords
ShellNZ
Mmmmmm, Ive not heard of Incad rope or regular LED, lol.I chose Neon Flex as I felt the ropelight LED's werent spaced close enough, I liked the solid lines that Neon gives out.Having a play in visualizer/sequencer now, no clue if Im doing it right but only one way to find out

logandc99
Hi all,Also from NZ and very new to all this stuff myself. Have been lighting up with Xmas lights for a few years but now want to get into the madness of light and sound. Still waiting to hear back from the LOR people to find out the shipping costs of the 16 channel package so a question to ShellNZ, what was your shipping cost to NZ?Only ask because in the past when ordering items from overseas, sometimes the shipping costs can be more than the item being purchased so I want to make sure I don't blow the budget with the shipping. And to anyone else out there, any great advantage to staring out with the 16 channnel pro starter version vs the residential starter or is the cheaper residential package the best way to go? logandc99
Ok, so got my answer from LOR about postage to NZ .Have been reading the forums and watching the videos like crazy and from what I can tell, a residential starter package should be a good place to start. Most of the differences in the table between the pro and residential series seem fairly straight forward ( esp the bit about which one hurts more when you drop it on your foot) but I am still a little confused by what it means by "can operate stand alone" when talking about the pro series vs the residential series. Does it mean that the pro series doesn't necessarily need to be connected to a computer to run a show ( sounds like the residential one definitely needs to be) or am I getting the wrong end of the stick.Sorry if my question sounds incredibly stupid but I am very new to this. Don
[...] but I am still a little confused by what it means by "can operate stand alone" when talking about the pro series vs the residential series.Does it mean that the pro series doesn't necessarily need to be connected to a computer to run a show ( sounds like the residential one definitely needs to be) or am I getting the wrong end of the stick. In Light-O-Rama terms, "Standalone" means that the controller can have a program loading into the memory of the controller, and then control itself, and other controllers connected to it. Standalone also mean 'animation only', in other words, you can't run a musical standalone sequence using the Showtime Pro controller. The Residential controllers do not have the standalone ability, so they would need to be connected to another device issuing commands. This could be your computer, Showtime director, mini-director or even a Showtime Pro controller that has a standalone sequence loaded onto it. logandc99
Ok, got it. Thanks for the reply. That helps clear up my confusion and means I can go ahead and order the residential starter.Really looking forward to having a go at trying a musical display this year (even if it will be very modest by most peoples standards).Sounds like there are some people on the forum with a serious case of the light-o-rama bug, thats for sure. Hope to be one of them in the future
