ThatDJTroy
Hi All!I'm currently in the "dream stage" where my grand ideas are only on a computer screen. My plan is to make the 'hardware' a reality this summer, and tie it all together by fall. That said, I am a determined DIY'er, but I have no idea how I'm going to build the snowflakes and star for my display; much less mount them. Check out my simulation: What should I use to make the snowflakes? Wire cage? Pipe? What?...Then, how do I mount them to the roof without creating any leaks from drill holes or the like? I've seen many videos where others have props on their roof, so I know it's possible.Next, what lightweight material should I use for the star over the garage. (Pardon the freehand version of it in my video. I drew it from the string lights as a reference.)Thank you in advance for all your help and suggestions!! Yeah! I'm really excited how that's going to turn out. I already experimented with spots on them. White obviously shows very well. Unfortunately I lose a lot of luminance with colors though.Keep the suggestions coming... Thanks all!
nmonkman
As far as mounting it on the roof I will make the strong recommendation, NEVER drill through your roof unless what you plan to put there is permanent and well sealed. With that said, I don't think you would want something unsighlty on your roof all year long.Check out my roof bases that I made for my reindeer. You could make something smaller for a snowflake.http://www.xmas.planetmonkman.com/roofbase1.htmlAlso, I found out the first year that wind loads were much greater than I thought they would be. A storm the day before opening day knocked over 5 of my reindeer. I solved the issue by using clothesline rope, tying of to the wire frame and then tying off to the gutter. You cant see them at night unless you are looking for them.
DougP
I also like how you incorporated your trees behind the house. Can't wait to see a video of your display in action.
