Audacity set up problem

Jerry

Recommended Posts

I'm following lor's instructions to install Audacity and the Lame exporter and have run into problems. I can't find a solution in the help section so I'll ask everyone here.

First problem , when I click on EDIT > PREFERENCES The window looks nothing like the one shown in LORs instructions(page 3) and there is NO "file format" tab to click on. I was able to work around that and opened the Lame Exporter and it took me back to this window that doesn't look right.

Next problem , there is no "MP3 Export Setup" section to adjust the "Bit Rate" ,so now I'm stuck in limbo not able to do anything more.

I'm not a computer wiz , but if I have clear instructions I can usually navigate ok. Running Windows Vista/basic on a Dell desktop.

Any help would be appreciated.

Don't know why LOR couldn't include all this in the software and make it just that much simpler. mad.gif

I think you will find your answer in this short video. The LOR instructions were based off a very old version of the software. Audacity just moved to version 2.0 this past week or so, so even this video may be out dated if you have 2.0 and if they changed this feature (but doubt it).

Yes, I have the new 2.0 version. This video isn't much help, it plays so fast it's hard to follow. Even so, I didn't see the window that Audacity brings up when I run it. I wonder if I need to import a music file into it before I can set up the bit rate ? The LOR instructions makes it look like you can set all this before you import any music files.

Still can't get it to work.

This is all VERY frustrating. Pay for software (LOR S2)that doesn't work properly untill you chase all over the internet, try to download plugins,add-ons, and what not, with poor instructions (they assume everyone is a computer genius) just to find that they don't work anyway. Just had to vent some . Could vent a LOT more but it would do no good. Everyone says "Have Fun" with this hobbie, well the deeper into this I get, the less "fun" it is.

MORE help please, Thanks

You didn't really tell us what you're trying to accomplish. Is there a file that you're trying to change to constant bit rate? I've used Audacity for years, and have had none of your problems. I just open the music file of my choice, and then click on the file menu and export as a .wav file. It doesn't get much easier than Audacity.

Maybe give us more description of what your end goal is in Audacity.

Hey, thanks,,Just trying to get Audacity and Lame set up to use as per the LOR instructions. I haven't sequenced anything yet, don't know if I ever will at this rate.Haven't tried to run a music file through it, waste of time if it isn't set up ( i'm thinking). I purchased the sequences for our halloween show last year . It all looked easy back then but now I'm not too sure. I can't even get this simple program to set up the way LOR wants it. Should I just trash can the downloads, and go looking for the older version just so I can follow LORs set up instructions ?

No need to use Audacity unless you're having VBR problems, or you want to start editing music. You should start using the sequence editor and see how you make out. You don't want to make something more complicated than it needs to be.

Yes that's for sure on the complicated part. From what I have read here on this forum I just felt it would be best if I went ahead and preped Audacity and run every music file through it as I get ready to sequence it,thus, I could avoid any VBR problems. I'm sure I'll need to use it at some point , so why not set it up first .

I didn't run any set up. I just installed Audacity, then LAME, then I just opened an MP3 file, edited it (to make it shorter), and exported it as an MP3. It just worked.

Jerry, I just got a new computer and updated to the new Audacity, as I recall I had to bring a music file into Audacity and then export the file and at that point Lame will ask you for the format that you want.

BIG Thanks Earle, now we're getting somewhere. I had a suspicion this might be the case. I just didn't want to waste my time if it wasn't. I'm not one to do things in the dark (changing bulbs being the exception wink.gif ) without some kind of instructions to follow. I'll give it a try later, now back to landscapping.

P.S. Is there any way to verify Lame has incorporated itself with Audacity, or doesn't it matter ?

Thanks again, Jerry

Export the audio file as MP3. If it works, then LAME has been used. Otherwise, I believe it will tell you that you need it.

Hi Steven, Thanks for the reply. from my understanding ,I may need to set the BR to 128. Did Lame not ask you if you wanted to or give you a choice of what you might want to do ? I don't see it doing it automaticly.

I found this page in the Audacity manual, which says:

Click File > Export, then choose MP3 in the "Save as type" dropdown and click the "Options" button to choose bit rate in the "Quality" dropdown. The default bit rate is 128 kbps in both versions of Audacity.

This worked in the version I'm using, which is 1.3.13-beta. I haven't yet tried 2.0.

From what I see, in Version 2.0, the above will not work unless you already have a music file in there ???. The "export" tab is not highlighted and is nonresponsive. This is where LORs install instructions go right out the window.

Wonder if the default BR is 128 CBR, like we need, or is it something else ?

The older versions are the same. You need to export something.

So open a music file! I know you have one on your system. All Windows systems come with a "Sample Music" folder.

I will later tonight when things quiet down and there's no interruptions. I think you may have missed my point though. In LORs "Using the Windows Audacity Sound Editor with the Lame MP3 Exporter Add-on" ,there is no mention of having a music file in there. It's like you should just go ahead and do all this in prep. for when you do need to use it. On page 3 things just get >>>>>>>>> when there is no "File Format " tab to use !!!

Dude... Audacity is an "Open Source" software that is not owned by anyone including LOR. You might want to read the instructions/help file for Audacity first. I bet if you Google search your question, an answer will appear.

If you're having with installing LOR software, this might help: http://www.lor2.com/support/

If none of the above help, then I'm getting hungry.

Since it appears that you will do best with the step by step directions that LOR provided, I would suggest that you download the version of the software that those directions used. The older version will easily have all the features you will need (the newer stuff is for advanced users). All the older versions are in either of the folders on this site:

  • 1 month later...

We updated the Audacity PDF to cover version 2.0 of Audacity. It will be more helpful now.
