Ooma-VOIP

I just ordered Ooma and plan to replace my home phone line with it. Since it will be connected to my internet router, I was curious whether anyone has had any problems running shows while using voice over ip services. Obviously, I can't test it for myself until Christmas time.

Thanks for any input offered.

two different networks, two different protocols. When E1.31 comes out, that might be a problem unless E1.31 is ran with a secondary NIC card.

I got my Ooma service back in Oct. 2009. And I have been running shows since my first show in 2009. Your going to love your service. I know I don't have many friends on this forum. Plus I may have a lot of enemies. But serously, I have loved my Ooma so much. I bought the 2 year extended warrenty, and bought the premier package. If you ever have problems or a question. Please send me in a PM. I'm sure I can help.

I hope you got the Ooma Telo unit.

I have to ask, what does " I know I don't have many friends on this forum. Plus I may have a lot of enemies.", have to do with anything about Ooma??? Just asking.

Good question Pete :)

I, too, wondered the same thing when I first saw that Pete. Thanks for asking.

Although it is seemingly nothing more than a gratuitous plea for sympathy, I find the writing style interesting - a gross understatement immediately followed in the next sentence by an overstatement.

I think what the Yank-er is trying to say is that many here don't find him trustworthy, and he hopes that his reputation doesn't dissuade you.

Anywho.....

I have Ooma as do my parents. You'll love it.

wbottomley is 100% correct: 2 completely different ways of communicating.

My knowledge of e1.31 is limited, but even if you go that route in the future, your Ooma device is probably not going to affect anything. 2 reasons:

1 - If you are using a 'modem' based internet (IE, you have a cable modem or other device that feeds a separate router or computer), the Ooma device will technically be out side of your network. In this case, you'll hook the Ooma to the modem, and then your router to the Ooma.

2 - If you are using a 'router' based internet (IE, your service provider gives you a box that combines the 'modem' and a router into 1. Verizon FiOS is like this.), the router is most likely also what is called a 'switch'. In computer parlance, a switch will look at the traffic on each port, and only forward the traffic to the correct output port(s). That means your Ooma device as well as the data connection that goes out into the world, won't even see the e1.31 traffic.

YMMV.

Mike... I didn't think of it at the time, but you can do port forwarding in the router to do you what you said. But... instead of hammering my router, I'll use a secondary NIC card for E1.31 traffic. It would make things much easier and not bog-down your primary NIC card.

This is 100% true, and if I were building a new network and/or going to push a bunch of channels this is the BEST way to do it.

Reason being is that a switch is really nothing more than a specialized computer, and it has a limited amount of processing power. Each switch would be different, but I assume that there is an upper limit and you could exceed it. As everyone is discovering, RGB pixel displays consume a LOT of channels. If the commands for those channels don't arrive close enough in time, you can get weird results.

"How many is too many?" is going to be the real question in the coming months. With just taking a WAG, I don't think 90% of the people out there are going to need separate nets or would see problems with their existing nets using E1.31. However, the 10% who push the envelope (or who may in the future) will want to design a stand-alone network just as you describe.

As for running across an internet connection - I don't think you'll find the results satisfactory. There is no way to predict the amount of latency across the net, and so you'll never be in perfect sync. For an example, go ahead and ping a large site, like Yahoo.com. Compare the times, and any variance greater than 5ms is going to be noticed. For me way over here on the other coast (with only a few hops between me and my WAN connection)->

Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 67ms, Maximum = 77ms, Average = 69ms

So, you could code your sequence for the 69ms average latency (IE, you would send the commands to the other 'node' 69ms early. However when it ends up taking 77ms, you'll be nearly .1 seconds behind.

Of course, there are ways around everything (embedding time code, synchronized clocks with pre-loading of the data, etc)... But if you have THAT much money, you've probably designed your entire thing from scratch. :(

---------------

(Sorry OP, I went off-topic. I can split this out if you like).

Jeff

I was agreeing with the assessment of his level of trustworthiness.

Hi Janet,

I have Ooma here and have no problems with it, however my home networks and my LOR networks are two separate networks. LOR networks come from a laptop with USB connections. The laptop is on my home network, and Ooma is plugged into my router/switch.
