DMX Entec Open, Entec Pro, or SanDevices ELOR

I hope I won't get a beating for asking a question that has probably been asked many times, but I am looking for a sounding board on this.

What do you think is the better choice, Entec Open, or Entec Pro when integrating into an LOR display, and using S3. I am also looking at the new ELOR from SanDevices. I realize the Entec Pro is about $100 more than the open.

If the Elor is still new to all of us, it was recently released for sale, a week ago. The advantage that so far shows off is that it can run 680 pixels, and has a DMX out. So that 512 channels is free in terms of price you pay for the pixel board. My math could be wrong but potentially you can run 850 pixels with this baord under full load if it works as intended, and if the network can keep up.

It really depends on what you want to add to the display. If its just a DMX universe the USB485 is dirt cheap and can be used to output RAW DMX as well.

The Enttec dongles do not do the same thing as the products from SanDevices. The ELOR will allow you to control a pixel controller from S3 via E1.31 such as the E681. When connected to a LOR Usb485 or 485b, the ELOR looks like 4 iDMX universes. The DMX output on the ELOR will be a mirrored output of the fourth universe. 680 Pixels on one universe is like having 12 CCR's on the same network. I have tested the ELOR and it's strong when running 680 Pixels on one USB485, but everything has limits! The Enttec devices are designed for DMX control not Pixel board control. Check out the manual for more info, http://www.sandevices.com/documents/ELOR_ver1_Operating_Manual.pdf The ELOR is a very simple addition to an awesome LOR system.

Thank you both for your responses.

I have decided I am going to buy an ELOR, and Entec device. Should I buy the Entec "DMX USB Pro", or the "Open DMX USB"? I may just buy both anyway.

The ELOR will give you 4 universes on E1.31, with 1 wired universe.
The Enttec will give you 1 wired universe.

You are aware that the Enttec and ELOR devices operate completely separately, do not operate with each other, and don't need to, right?

I did figure if I bought both, I could use both. I am just at the stage right now that I want learn about it, and find a way to incorporate it into my display. I am just going to dig in and experiment.

Just to clarify on this, the ELOR has 4 Ethernet sockets. The 4th socket is shared between the 4th E1.31 DMX512 universe and the On-Board DMX512 port. They 'mirror' each other so to speak.

In a somewhat unrelated point that I started in another thread, I will point out that even if you don't use the E1.31 capabilities of the ELOR, but only use the wired DMX512 port of the 4th universe, you will have a device that does everything an iDMX1000 will do, at less than half the price.

Well, I finally got it sorted out, at least I am functional with DMX. I got the Enttec Pro, and the HolidayCoro sample pack. I am still interested in getting the ELOR to play with, but I am at least rolling with it.

I appreciate all of your input, and i have finally gotten my toe in the door with DMX. The bottom line for me is that I just had to get the parts in hand to experiment. Now I have a new challenge to work on.

Nope. 682.6 to be exact.
