Retail cost: 2 universes $400. 16 universes $1600. It outputs E1.31 directly from your pc's network card. (You can get it cheaper but that is the retail pricing). It is a commercial software package used by quite a few in the lighting/DJ industry.

You can download and play with it, fully functional for free, but warning, once you do and you see what it can do, it's addictive, and you won't want to go back to more conventional software.

The beauty is it works great with LOR, which you can still use as your primary sequencing software. LOR will easily control Madrix.

You simply load individual video effects in up to 120 bins and simply tell them when to run with a single DMX trigger from LOR.

It also has audio to lights, and sound to lights options, that convert what you hear into what you see in your DMX lighting. By themselves they don't look like a lot, but when you combine them with the extensive video effects library (that you can add in layers) you can get amazing results, like what you saw at Fabian's.

Some will complain about the price, and yet spend more than that on the pixel based lighting hardware. Then the real issue comes in - programming hundreds/thousands of DMX channels to make use of what pixels have to offer.

I dont have the amount of time to attempt that manually, so this software I figure will cover what my time is worth, allowing me to do other things, like designing new elements, etc, instead of spending what would amount to hundreds of hours programming.

Just my 2 cents.

Here is another great video using pixels and Madrix that is located here in Southern California.

Unreal...and beyond my capabilities!

LOR will control Madrix?

You just made my day. I have been really interested in Madrix for a while now but did not want to give up my LOR software as my main control. I had no Idea it was possible.

Do you know where I can find any info on this?

Thanks
Stephen

HI Stephen:

You can talk with Fabian, Jim St John, or Gary Martin, all of whom run Madrix with LOR. They can give you operational advice.

I have downloaded and played with Madrix. LOR's control of Madrix is via a simple DMX channel output that selects video effects from one (or more) of the various (120 in total) effect bins. I am planning on using 3 DMX channels - first one to select one of the 60 bins in Madrix section A, one to select one of the 60 bins in Madrix section B, and one to control the fade between video effects chosen between the various bins.

Madrix offers a lot, and will save hundreds (or more) of hours of programming time, as you design a video effect once, drop it into a bin and Madrix will translate that into what your predefined pixel display needs to display that effect without any additional effort on your part. It's phenomenal (leave it to the Germans to develop something sophisticated like this!).

It also allows music to video effects directly. While there are only a few, the beauty is you can design any video effects, put them in the bins and then choose which effect you want to use that will change to the music, by simply layering it/them over one of the more simple music to light or sound to light selections!

You need to download Madrix, and read the help manual. I have spent at least 24 hours worth of reading and playing, and am comfortable with what it does, and yet only scratching the surface of all it can do.

There are 2 downsides - first you need a robust pc to run LOR and Madrix on the same machine (i5 with sufficient RAM or better), or you can use 2 smaller pcs...

And then there's the big one - the price! For a 16 universe package (what I am interested in), you are looking at $1600 retail (can be had somewhat cheaper from a retailer). It is not for the faint of heart, but neither is the use of pixels.

The move to pixels, while exciting is going to be expensive. Folks can have great displays without needing pixels. My philosophy is if you are going to spend $1K plus on pixels, you should have sophisticated software that really demonstrates what they can do.

There are other good ways of programming pixels, but now that I have seen Madrix and what it has to offer, considering the programming time it will save, and importantly the fact that I can continue to run my LOR shows and program my non pixels with LOR S3.. the decision has been made for me!

Thanks for all the cool info. I am downloading the Madrix software as I speak. Can you explain a little more about what 16 universe package is and where it can be purchased.

Thanks
Kenny

Kenny, you purchase the package you want (I think the 2 universe package is $400 suggested retail)from any Madrix dealer/retailer. If you go to the Madrix website, they list their retailers.
I know Fabian and Jim St. J are both Madrix dealers.
