tonyski
Happy New Year all.I need some help choosing a strobe/flash unit for next season.I'm looking for something that gives a bright single blast of light to go on top if a Bellagio style light tower. I don't want a stroboscopic effect. Weather resistant would be nice too.Any suggestions??
roknjohn
What is a Bellagio style light tower?
jimswinder
If you go for the C9 type base ones, don't get an LED strobe...but rather an Xenon...check out this thread:http://www.christmascarolina.com/forums/lights/1001-strobes-cdi-vs-cls.html
Guest wbottomley
Jim, here's something else I have written: http://www.highcountrylights.com/blog/making-your-strobe-lights-reflective.html
tonyski
Thanks all. A Bellagio Tower (Pole) is just a vertical leaping archthat has been straightened out and stood on end vertically.Darrel Brown calls them light towershttp://www.christmaslightshow.com/light-tower-stacker-8-channel-kit.htmlI have some c9 strobes but they don't provide the big pop I'm looking forThanks again
scubado
A 20W led will do the trick for ya. You can find them on ebay. You will need a DC controller to run it. If you are only using for flash/lightning, you don't need it in a housing or heat sink. I just solder them onto a wire and fasten it where needed. Nobody will see it coming! tonyski
Scubado,Could you provide a little more info about the DC controllerI see the leds on ebay and know how to solder, but don't understand the controller and power supplyHow do you protect it from the elements

You can silicon the solder joint and lead if you want. I've had one get flooded in scuba diving and didn't hurt it.
tonyski
Thanks. So I'd need a power supply, LEDs and the board. I've seen 110v weatherproof units on eBay for about $40 each. Wouldn't that be easier for just 3 units?

SCUBA diving? On a serious note, while silicone on a solder joint isn't a big deal and a good method to weather proof a connetion, be careful about putting silicone on components that are of value. Some of the elements in the silicone can damage some materials used in electronics. Better to use a product designed for the purpose in those cases. And remember that silicone can be conductive until it has fully set up.

I used high powered leds and made my own enclosures for underwater video.Good to know about silicon, maybe epoxy would be better. One thing to know about these leds, they get very hot! If you want to use them for lighting purposes you need a decent heatsink. But in a flash/lightning situation, you can do without the heatsink.
