Tonight was a busy night (Christmas Eve) the weather was kinda mild, my son handed out 100's of candy canes people talking to us about the display, I'm answering questions (like we all do)

then around 9:30pm people started to wane off and here comes this van full of kids. my son goes out to greet them after 10 minutes of them watching the show and before my son arrives he opens his door gets out and stares at my son and my son asked if they would like some candy canes and he said no, then my son asked if they like the lights, his reply, No....and drove off

Now here I am sitting in my chair like Santa after the toy drop pleased with all the work that took a year to do was appreciated by everybody and ..... like the whistle from a dropping bomb. BAM, I come crashing to the ground after my son told me what he said and did.

My wife said that maybe he thought we were going to ask for a donation, which we never do. but that might be the case

it still put a damper on my evenings festivities, Oh well

Merry Christmas Everybody,
Lets do it again next year, except Larger and Brighter

Maybe it was a van full of vandals, and they were upset that you guys were out there "keeping guard." Maybe a blessing in disguise.

I very much tend to agree with your assessment on this one surfing!

That's the first thing that would have come to my mind if something like that happened to me.

I'd also be taking down that vehicles tag number color and write a description of it's occupants.

Most folks would never suspect a van full of kids with an adult to vandalize a display, but it seems that some families have no morals or scruples and you hear or see such things as families using their children as thieves today.

So I'd be on a wary lookout for those folks to come back after the display was done for the night, just so they could damage/vandalize and/or steal items from the display.

Think I'd be hiding in the bushes with a shotgun full of rocksalt to blast up ther a$$e$ if they did come back and attempted to vandalize/steal anything!

PMC, don't let one guy dampen your spirits.

Great job. Enjoy the good ones and ignore the bad as if they didn't even exist. Don't let them take all the good stuff away in one word. Not worth it.

Just remember the 100s of candy canes you DID hand out. Because all those people will certainly remember you and your display.

Marry Christmas!!

I had some vandalism on my display last year, and I suspect is was drunk teenagers, but have no way of knowing. Now I have two wireless video cameras streaming to the TV in my office. I can't watch all the time, but try to be aware. The damage happened after hours when my yard was completely dark, so this year I also have a show after the show. It start at the same time my regular show stops, but shines spotlights on the yard, and turns on and off some of the white lights in the display until 7:00 in the morning. So far so good.

The thing that put it into perspective for me tonight is as I was wrapping my Kids gifts. I heard giggling from the TV, and there was a car with two young Children laughing and enjoying the show. It sure helps offset the bad memories of the vandals last year, and the cameras gave me the chance to enjoy hearing the Children giggle tonight.

99.9% of the folks love what we do but .1% don't but I don't let it phase me. Had one kid on a skate board tell me he thought it all sucked.

Next year have a code word for your son when hes out there, like a simple "Dad Scrooge is on TV" Then you rush the van like a Rhino throwing candy canes and Glitter into the windows. The candy canes becuase they are festive, glitter because there is no way in this universe to ever get that out of the car or off your clothes even with fire!

I had one guy ask me what else mine does. I have 32 channels all white. Then he proceded to tell me about the ones on youtube which are mostly us! With a smile and a kind thank you but how many lights are on your house again? Ended that BS real quick, his kids loved the show and they went home.

So Clif notes. Glitter, Sharpened Candy Canes, and Code words!
