You may want to reconsider winning that contest. You have to give away the $100,000. to a public school and all you get is to pay the taxes and fees on $100,000.

Checked it out the Patch pays the taxes, and actually give the school the money.

That's not how I see it in their rules:

"10. Prizes: Twenty-four (24) Finalists will each receive $500 to use for December electric bills.

For One (1) Grand Prize Winner, Patch will donate $100,000 to the public school system where the winning home is located. All specifics of donation are in Sponsor's sole discretion. Private schools are excluded. In the event the selected public school system is unable to accept a cash donation, Sponsor may elect to donate computers and/or other educational equipment/materials valued at or near $100,000.

Prize recipients are responsible for any taxes and fees associated with receipt or use of a prize. Prizes are not transferable."

That being said, I wouldn't mind the second place prize! I wonder if a public school would agree to reimburse someone for the taxes. Seems like a fair deal for the school.

Ok, so if the school wants the $100,000 "the recipient - ie the school, has to pay the taxes" if they want the money or computers

The problem is that the rules state that the prize isn't transferable. The recipient would be the homeowner. The contest looks great but that pitfall is why I'm not going to enter. I had to even point out that out to my local Patch Editor.
I just wanted to point out that out to you.

Merry Christmas

To all of you that have voted, thank you. Also found out that the rules allow you to vote once a day.

And a winners tax is a LOT higher than what you might think!

That's why I would never enter such contests where the "TAX MONEY" IS NOT taken from the prize money.

Most often (not always) the winners taxes and fees are double what they are for other taxable/fee based items.

Sure isn't fair to the winner in this case, that is for certain!
