If you have squirrels around, then I would tend to believe that they are your culprit.
As Don said, I doubt that anyone who wanted to do damage would do so little.

Plus I had to go fix a string of lights today that the squirrels had chewed 2 of the bulbs off! I love the squirrels but at $15 to $20 a pop for LED strings I do have my hair ruffled about it.

I went ahead and had a talk with 2 of the squirrels who were sitting watching me repair the string and I think we have an agreement for now.
They don't chew and I won't shoot!

Plus I spritzed some coyote urine around the pole the lights are on and that will keep them away as well.

The squirrels just look at the lights as a shiny nut to them and a nice prize to take back home to the nest. You have to kind of think like they do to keep them out of things.
I raise and release critters so I have all types around. Squirrels, raccoons, foxes, rabbits, crows, hawks, deer, ravens. I have not had any trouble with any of them with my display since I feed them and interact with them (well other than watching some of them sit in the display watching the lights, which is pretty funny actually).

Rabbits really seem to like green wire also.

Or as the rabbit would say, "Looked like lettuce to me".
