Transmitter distorting audio

Recommended Posts

So I've spent 3 days on this distorted audio issue and I've officially lost all my hair!

We added a new song this year and the Ramsey FM25 doesn't like it at all. The audio is terribly distorted only when played through the transmitter. It's fine in my speakers and all the other songs in the playlist are fine through the transmitter.

So I've read all the posts about normalizing audio & I've done that to the best of my ability using Audacity, Garageband and MP3Gain (all separately of course, to see if one or the other would work). Nope!! :( I tried manually turning the volume down on my PC when playing the song through the transmitter which should have done the trick. Nope!

I'm hoping someone has encountered this and has an idea of how to fix it! I've run out of ideas.

Also it's not the audio file, because I've downloaded it from 3 different sources because I wondered if it was corrupt somehow and they all have the same problem.

I will be forever indebted to you for your assistance......plus my husband's patience are running slow with me! And there are a new pair of boots on the line.....Momma needs new boots! :)

Thanks, if you need any more info about my problemo please let me know.

Cody,
I would like you to turn off your radio (of course during a non show time). Now with a set of speakers on your computer or a pair of headphones. Listen to one of the songs in your show, other than the one giving you the problem. And this has to be the files in your LOR folder. Note the volume. Now listen to the file that is giving you grief. Is the Max volume of this song louder or the same as the good file? If the volume of the file giving you grief louder. Then you still need to work with this file and remaster the loudness of this file.

Thanks for the tip Max-Paul. I'm away from my set up until tomorrow, but i will check the volume as soon as i return.

Excuse the 'blonde' moment but you mean for me to audibly determine if the volume of the loudest point in the song is louder than the other songs? Meaning to judge the volume with my naked ear? (that sounds like an insanely stupid question) or is there a tool within the media player I should be using?

Thanks again.........especially for your patience! :?

Basically yes. There are things that the human ear can determine easily that software doesn't easily do.

Also check for heavy bass that the transmitter may not be able to effectively transmit, but which saturates it into clipping, which sounds like static. (same way being to loud does)

Cody, just curious, what song are you having problems with?
I had a similar problem with my MP3 player at Halloween with Van Helsing's Tubular Hell. Open song in Audacity and goto Effects> leveller. It will decrease the loud spots and increase the soft spots to a more even volume. This feature worked great for me.

Sounds exactly like the problem I'm having. I too have a Ramsey FM25. I get "distortion/Static" during certain parts of songs but not others. From what I can tell, lowering the volume and adjusting the input volumes on the transmitter did not help me either.

I am having trouble with Wizards in Winter for example.
I ran it though Audacity Leveler with a Moderate setting at 70DB. It made it worse!!!

I tried different settings. Heavy setting was extremely bad!
Maybe I'm not doing something right.

Let me know if it works for you.

I found that if you do a high pass filter, you can limit the amount of low Bass notes in a song that might do the trick. I will try it tonight.

The troublesome song is Amazing Grace remix. You can hear a portion of it on amazon. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0011GQVY6/ref=docs-os-doi_0
We are also using Wizards of Winter but dont have any trouble at all with it. Amazing Grace def. has some intense sound with deep bass & i can see how it can cause some issue.

I cant get any portion of amazing grace to play cleanly, but it could be that the majority of the song has deep bass.

I'll work on it some more tomorrow with all your tips and see if it gets better. Fingers crossed!

I'm going to take up drinking, that is obviously the solution!

Still no luck so far today.

Ran high pass filter, & then tried low pass, the low pass actually helped more, so I guess the treble is more intense than the bass. But still distorted.

My version of Audacity (Mac version) doesn't have the leveller option. So I tried the Amplify (changes the volume of the selected audio) and then tried Compressor (compresses the dynamic range of the selection so that the loud parts are softer while keeping the volume of the soft parts the same) Neither did the trick.:)

Since I'm not too familiar with audacity it's a bit trial and error for me, so I've done a million different things and the only thing that has made a bit of difference is the low pass filter, but like I said it is still distorted but it's slightly improved.

The audio doesn't sound louder than the other songs I'm using or have used in the past, or if it is, it's a minor difference. I'm so confused that when I manually turn down the volume when its running through the transmitter that the distortion doesn't improve at all. I just keep thinking that if its the track volume it would improve.

I'm so confused :? !

Cody,

Just went and listened to that sample of music at Amazon. Maybe it is me, but it seems that their file is rather hot (loud) and maybe a bit distorted. So if the source is bad, then I dont know if you cant do anything with audacity that would fix the problem. Can you find another source file to try to work with?

Max

P.S. I just seen about a dozen free download sites. Not sure what difference is. But Yule does a 2006 version on Amazon and other sites appear to have a 2007 version. I do think that there is something different in the middle. But using Audacity you can cut that out and stitch it back together.

Max,
It does have some intended distortion and yes it's intense! My husband is set on using that song, & won't waiver, personally I've got no ties to it. :)

Guess I'll keep fiddling with it. I contacted the Holdman guy that uses it and he didn't have any trouble with it. I must've done something wrong in the universe I guess.
