Show plays at computer, but won't play in yard

When I turned on the LOR for the 1st time this year. It said it was unable to locate the LOR port & to make sure it was turned on & connected. It was both. I checked the LOR hardware tab and it had the comm port set are "none". I tried to do the auto config. but it found none. I manally set it to comm 1. It will play at my computer but not on the lights in the yard. I tried comm 3 which was the only other choice and it didn't work either. Everything worked great last year. The computer has not been used since then and noone made any changes. I am assuming it was supposed to be set on one of the comm ports. The computer has a cat5 cable plugged directly into the back and then into the LOR unit in the yard. Lights are plugged into the box in the yard. All the boxes in the yard are daisy chained and nothing will light up. I can hear it playing at my computer. On the hardware tab there is a place to refresh "select units to configure" if I click it it says "found 0 units". I am not sure what all is supposed to be on this tab. I am attaching a printscreen.

You do NOT directly plug in the cat5 cable to the computer. You should be using a serial adapter.

To locate what com ports are in use, go to Control Panel and get to the Device Manger (on WIndows 7 it is under System).

Do you have a solid or flashing LED light on the LOR board?

You don't plug the cat 5 directly into the computer! If it worked last year for you, you must have a USB485 around? This plugs into your computers USB port and the cat 5 into that. Once this is done run HU and you should be good.

I do have a thing that goes from USB to the Cat5 plug into the back of the computer. I don't remember using it last year. I tried doing that and nothing changed. I really need someone to talk to. I tried to call LOR but only got a recorder. Our show starts Thanksgiving night! I work during the day and so does my son who set up the show for me last year. Is there anyone that is available tomorrow early evening? (eastern time)

Hook up the USB485 adapter, and do those steps again.

Open the Hardware Utility (HU or HWU) see what happens. If it gives you an error message, try the autoconfigure button. Unless your USB drivers are not installed, that should find it. (Make sure you have everything connected before opening the HWU!)

My husband is going out and turning the power on now then I will try again. I have the USB/Cat5 adapter plugged into the back of the computer waiting on him. CROSS YOUR FINGERS

Yes, what Don said. And to verify your computer sees the USB device - go to the Device Manager and expand "Ports (COM & LPT)".

You should see something like: "USB Serial Port (COM3)". You also should not see any error-type symbols next it.

These are the 485 adapters that others are talking about. (circled) You need to use one of these with the cat5 going to the controller
