mrforemark Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 What are some common methods used to anchor lights to the ground when building a mega tree. I only plan to go up about 10'
Richard Hamilton Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 How come you want to anchor lights to the ground? Why not anchor them to the base of the megatree? I think that is what most people do. Perhaps you don't have a base around the bottom of the megatree?
mrforemark Posted November 21, 2011 Author Posted November 21, 2011 Correct. No Base. I was just going to run lights from the top to the ground. I guess maybe its not a mega tree. I'm gunna wing it.

I'm gunna wing it.Its still a mega tree...the first year I did it with a 10 footer, doubled over my mini light strings, zip tied together...and used tent pegs to anchor to the ground. You will want something that goes into the ground a ways depending on your geographical location.
beeiilll Posted November 21, 2011 Posted November 21, 2011 My first year I used wie staples that I made out of coat hangers so they came to be approx. 8" long on each side. They worked fine to hold the strings down but were a pain in the butt to drive in straight and then to get out in the spring without doing damage to the light strings. The next year I went to using 3/4" gray electrical conduit to make a ring on the ground. I tywrap the light strings to the ring and use conduit clamps on the pipe with 16" long spikes driven through the holes in the clamps. Gives a little flex to the whole thing so that there is less strain on the light strings and yet it stays nice and tight.
DynaMike Posted November 22, 2011 Posted November 22, 2011 I just built these for my 1st mega tree, 20 ' tall 32 channel. The stake is 8 " long cut from .250" steel with a .250" s hook installed. The s hook will hold the .125" SS wire rope also attached to the toper. Attached files
Dad02 Posted November 22, 2011 Posted November 22, 2011 Tent pegs work well if that is all you're going to do. If you live in a snowy climate consider putting something over the peg, like a bag or notched can.

FireMedic4Christ Posted November 22, 2011 Posted November 22, 2011 landscape cloth pins. I use the longer ones that are about 12" long.Good luck!
TJ Hvasta Posted November 22, 2011 Posted November 22, 2011 I use 2' rebar.. buy 4' long and cut in half.. abt 18" goes into the ground to hold the 4 guy wires for the 16' MT
captainron19 Posted November 23, 2011 Posted November 23, 2011 Grey pvc works perfect for making a ring at the base of your tree. I drilled pilot holes in mine and screwed in brass cup hooks to wrap each strand of lights as it comes to the base.
