Home Owners Association Don't Let Me put Signs

Recommended Posts

After call the HOA I don't know what kind of sign I can put on my yard about the FM transmitter frequency number my neighbors can listen by the radio.
HOA don't allow me to put any kind of sign on my yards. They said have to be some kind of sign like a christmas light "sign".

Any suggestions about what kind of sign HOA allow. Or any design of lighting sign.

Thanks

I don't think anyone here (unless they're in your same HOA) can answer the question about what they'll allow. If you want to check out signs, just type "tune-to signs" in the search and you'll be busy for the rest of the evening.

What about a sign in one of your windows with the tune in? Simple to.make, a sheet of wood or plastic with with your station, drill 1/4" holes and poke the lights through, or you can buy from Coro signs.

You would have to check your covenants to see what you can and can not put up as far as signage. The HOA sign police do not distinguish between your display tune too sign and others. To them, they are all bad and to be BANNED FOREVER!

So, if you go back to the covenants (look them up online or at your county courthouse when the subdivision was platted and registered for development (or shortly thereafter)) to see what you can/can't get away with.

Once you know their rules, you can engineer around it. Nothing would stop you (from say) putting out lights in a pattern on your garage or roofline detailing what your frequency is as long as it does not meet their definition of a sign.

edit: If all it has to be is a Christmas sign, be sure to say "Listen to the Christmas lights at XX.X FM". That should meet their requirements.

I bought this:
RadioSign-Front-Daytime.JPG

From: http://www.holidaycoro.com/default.html?RadioSign.asp

As you see, its the same size and frame as a real estate sign. Maybe the HOA allows real estate signs and you could get away with the above?

BTW: I am extremely happy with the sign. I put "Tune to" in red and it turned out great.

I agree. If the HOA complains about it, call your local news. If they don't complain about about all your lights, then a little sign isn't going to hurt anything.

get one of those cheap home light projectors, the kinds you can inset a net graphic and have it shine on the side of your house. Then go to officemax and have them print a transparent tune to sign that you can insert into that projector. The "sign" is now projected on the side of your garage and you do not violate a sign rule.

HA! I like this.
I would think that by the time they give you notice and an amount of time to take it down... Christmas will be over :D

So if you cant put up a sign you are very limited.

How do you sell a house? Announce a Baby? "The Party is Here"

Is there anything about playing music? Instead just add speakers and let you neighbors know you'd like to use your FM station but the HOA won't allow it so enjoy Jingle Bells until 10PM when the HOA rules say I have to turn it off. You might then get your neighbors to help you out.

I agree with the idea of make it in lights and if they complain say its christmas lighting. I am curious how this works of for you. Sure glad I dont have and HOA. Good Luck.

I live in an HOA and have the same problem. I bought a sign from Holiday Coro last year of the 1xx.x type and loaded it with Multi colored LEDs so it's obviously lit from Christmas lights. Mounted it in the same frame pictured above and I even have the sign flake out during the "Pixar" beginning so it's an 'active' part of the display.

Hire the neighborhood kids to use chalk to color in big block letters of your frequency on the road.

Do like they do at football games and paint the frequency in your grass.

Put a sign at the entrance, but outside of, your neighborhood saying "HEY EVERYBODY! Christmas Lights this Way -> Tune radio to xx.x FM". If they don't like signs in your yard they'll love this.

You know they are just playing a technicality, right? The aim here is to shut you down, not about signs. I recommend you work to get on your HOA board to get ahead of the situation.

JStorms, my 2 cents worth. I love those ideas.

I absolutely hat HOAs. They are run by a bunch of power hungry twerks that just love to control other people's lives. They typically don't even live in the same neighborhood.

Twenty years ago, an HOA came after me for something I thought was nuts. They wanted to control the color of my "light Blue" blinds that faced the street. Without getting into details, it went to court and cost them $10,000 (paid to me), 2 of the members forced to quit their review board, and they never messed with me again. Upon buying this house, I specifically looked for one that was NOT in an HOA.

OK, sorry it is off the topic of Christmas and LOR. Those people should be cutting some slack for an event that will likely go 30 days or less.

How about a nice big lighted balloon. I know someone who did that. Technically, it is not "On" the property, ha!

Good catch Pat, however I note that the photo is the stock photos from the Coro web site (http://www.holidaycoro.com/default.html?RadioSign.asp) and not the sign used by imacericg

You are right that the FM band in the USA only goes down to 88.0 (lowest station is 88.1), however most newer receivers will go down to either 87.7 or 87.5. I use 87.9 for the FM encoder for my XM Satellite radio in my truck.

My HOA covanents give Homeowners 30 days after receipt of a Notice to correct any violation. If the cure period isn't a route you want to take, stick the sign inside the house up against the window :-)

Put it on the back of your car. They cant say anything about graphics on your car whether its painted or attached A lot of companies use this approach when a city has tough sign regulations

Cant touch you!
