unable to communicate with controller

I am in the hardware utility trying to update the firmware on an older model 2 1602w. I have a cat 5 cable in the controler but when I hook up the usb adapter the light goes out before I attach to the computer. I have tried two different cables and two different dongles but the hardware utility cannot find a com port. any ideas?

Ok, before you even plugged in the USB485, did you install the drivers that came with it? You have to use those specific drivers, as the ones that come with Windows (tho you didnt say which OS you have) will NOT work..

Next, after you install the driver that came with the USB485, you will, in all likelihood, have to go into the Device Manager and assign a Com port BELOW.. 10, really, preferably below Com 5, to the USB485 device (Properties tab.) as the Hardware Utility wont work well with Com ports higher than ..I think it's 15, so the lower, the better.

Third.. after you've done both of those things, open the HU and check the com port assigned to the USB485. Either do the Auto Com Port Find, or assign the one you set it in the Device Manager. Then, top right corner of the HU, change the Max Unit number to.. 4 or so, that way the HU will be able to find the controller LOTS faster than going thru 255 addresses before it announces it found your controller..

Plug the Cat5 to the controller and hit Refresh. The HU should find the controller.

When you say the light goes out... Which light? The Red blinking LED?

the usb to cat5 adapter did not come with a driver so I may need to go find one. I am running windows xp and yes i do mean the blinking light in the controller.

Ok, start here.. d/l this USB485 troubleshooting .pdf file.. it'll take you thru the steps to:

1) cleanly remove any and all USB485 drivers, thats the FTClean.zip file..

2) Down on,page.. page 10 is a link to d.l the LOR USB485 driver.. click on it, it'll d/l the driver, save it to your desktop, then install it.. once it's installed, only then can you plug in the USB485 adapter..
