LED but Which ones

Thanks to all of you on the forum. I have been reading and reading and started to get a lot better idea what I want to do for my Lighting Display.

BUT.. I still have questions.:P

1) There are so many different types of Bulbs in the "FULLWAVELED" market. If my first goal is to build a Mega tree, which size Bulb should I use. What about the spacing between bulbs.

2) I have a 20ft Telescoping Flag Pole already in the ground. Can someone point me to a good thread or pdf on making this into the aforementioned Mega tree?

3) Just so I understand this correctly. SPT-2 Zip Wire. I can add multiple female receptacles to one strip (Keeping in mind total Watts)

4) I hear many of you singing the prases CDI, Can anyone give me a review on Winterland. I say this just because they are close enough for me to drive to their front door in about 45 minutes.

Thank You again for your input.

Well you are probably going to get a lot of different ideas as far as the type of bulb to use for a mega tree.

I personally use a C6 style for mine and I like it as do the folks who have seen it (as you can see on my web site).
I have tried the mini light style (M6) and the 5MM style as a test and I was not really pleased with them.
The M6 just didn't have the "punch" that the C6 does and the 5MM were too directional for my taste.
I would recommend using a string that has 4" spacing between bulbs.

I have a dedicated 21 foot piece of pipe that I use for the mega tree with the parts from Daryl at Christmas Light Show ( http://www.christmaslightshow.com/mega-tree-parts.html ), so I can't really give you much on using a flag pole but do a search on here and over on the Planet Christmas forum and you will find a lot of people that have used flagpoles.
If you put your location in your profile, people will know better what kind of winter weather you get and can comment on this better as far as guy wires and how much load your flag pole can take.

Yes you can use multiple receptacles on zip wire (spt1 or spt2) while minding the total amps on the line. They make a receptacle that goes "in line" for just that purpose, but a lot of people (myself included) just use a regular end receptacle and file a notch in it for the wire to pass through.

Yep CDI is great. LOL Paul is a real help and the company is probably the finest in this hobby to deal with. Sorry I have no experience with Winterland so I can't really help you there either. Just can vouch for CDI's worthyness.

Lastly, do yourself a favor and buy a good quality brand of LED strings such as Holiday Creations or similar. It will make your life much easier in the long run not having to have burned out bulbs or problems with dimming, chasing, or flashing effects. It is more than worth it to have the peace of mind of using a quality product. This hobby can be expensive so it is more of an investment than a purchase.

Good luck and welcome to the fun!

Bill

I purchased some c9 LED lights from Winterland and had no problems with them at all. They seemed to be good people to deal with. Looking at their web site the c6 and m5 leds seems to be a bit expensive even if you can pick them up. I would look at CDI, Christmas light Show, Holiday-light Express, Christmas-Leds.COM, Noveltylights.Com and others for their cost for lights and shipping.

Like Bill, I use C6 LEDs from CDI for the 64 strings on my megatree.

I see a lot of you using the, I guess medium size bulbs. Are your trees set back some, or is it just the fill/flood of the color and light that you like. I use the m5 & 6, but my tree is 10 feet from the road, or would it make a difference?

  • 2 weeks later...

OK Guys.. Thanks for all the help and advice I have found on these pages. I have ordered my EDM 12000 today.. I hope it gets here. I have 8 songs sequenced and ready to go. working on two more. I have all the parts for my two 7' Webers. 6 mini trees and 2 archs. Now if the controller would just get here. or at lease know when it is coming. I can get the 16 channel 5800 first time show on the road.

I am sure there are things that I have missed.... and will find out too late :D

Thanks Everyone

Can always edit as the season goes. Just cause you light em, doesnt mean they have to stay exactly as they are. I know I plan to add a song or two after my initial lighting, and will probably end up tweaking some as it goes, too.

I also use C6 strands for my tree. It is 10ft tall and I use 70ct strands to go up and back down to make a wedge. This way 16 strands makes 32 vertical paths and gives the tree a nice full effect.

Imawlkr, thanks again for all your help with structure design and the photos of it. Question, is there a reason you use the c6 vs the m6 on your mega. I use the m6 for no reason, just because. I've seen a lot of you guys use the c6, and was just curious if there was a reason. I do want to let you know that my main mega is in the front only about 15 feet from the street. Don't know if that would have any bearing on the style of lights.

no reason really, just like the c6 better than the m5 because the "bulb" is a little bigger. My tree is about 25 feet from the road. Also, I am switching to LED icicles next year and they are c6 also so I just wanted to try and keep all the bulbs the same.
