R.I.P. Dave Severns

On October 20, 2011, Dave Severns (Severex on these forums) lost his 18-month battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 53.

Dave‘s Christmas display has been an attraction since 1995, when he started wrapping his huge Magnolia tree. What started as a competition with his neighbor grew into a cooperative project in 2002 when he animated the display with music, a radio transmitter, and 48 channels of digital-IO using solid-state relays and the Dasher software. He continued the display even while going through chemotherapy.

The display raised funds for Dave’s favorite charity, the Second Harvest Food Bank. In 2010, the display raised over $84,000. Since 2003, it raised over 1,000,000 pounds of food.

Dave took steps to reduce his use of fossil fuels. He would always repair things, including Christmas lights, before throwing them in the landfill. In 2006 he installed 65 photovoltaic solar panels, which provided more than enough power for his Christmas light display. In 2009 he bought a Tesla Roadster, which used the excess electric power and gave an “E-Ticket ride” without using a drop of gasoline. In 2011 he bought a Chevy Volt, which is also charged from solar power.

He is survived by his wife Sharon, and daughter Kelsey.

Thanks for sharing steve, breaks my heart every time I read about someone's life being what seems too be taken short. Lets hope that Dave's spirit is passed along to everyone in the hobby.
