How to use a CCR outside

Recommended Posts

This year we are using a chain of CCR's outside. My three questions are:

*Would the CTB16 Enclosure be enough to weatherproof the Brain(s) and Power converter(s)?
*Are there any other steps I should take to protect the CCR, brain, and power converter?
*And finally, is there a better alternative (power wise) to power the brains?

Thanks!
BrandonH

Looks to me like it will do a fine job just like you have it.

I was wondering the same thing...but was also concerned about possible problems with heat with everything packed so tightly...

will heat be a problem?

Good point - I never even thought of that. Heat buildup just isn't a concern on my radar. Don't know how it might affect Brandon - no clue what part of the world he's from.

Heat shouldn't be a problem here in Oklahoma. It never rises above 60 after late October/early November.

Should I be concerned about the small amount of water that can seep through the edge of the enclosure and mounting holes in the back? (It still rains occationally)

That's basically what i'm going to use, except my enclosure is an old telephone enclosure. I know mine is water tight but not sure about the heat buildup.

It doesn't appear anyone answered Brandon's third question...and it got me to thinking (probably incorrect thinking, but thinking nonetheless)...

If you are putting 4 CCR controllers into an enclosure do you really need all four of the power sources?

Could you not use one to supply the 12volts needed to all 4 controllers?

I must be wrong in my thinking as it seems too easy...

I'm a bit concerned about mounting my CCR in a vertical position, with cables coming into the top of the unit. I had a problem with an iDMX mounted vertically. I have some corrosion problems in the RJ45 jacks... I think I'm getting condensation on the cat 5 cable, and it's dripping down into the connector. I use only gold plated AMP connectors, so I don't imagine they are the culprit.

I'm trying to find a box that is wide enough to mount the iDMX horizontally to avoid this problem.

Any thoughts?

D.T.

I don't know where but I remember seeing each ribbon needs its own power supply. Now if you used one power supply that pushes out the needed power then why not?

According to the CCR manual:

12 VDC 3 amp power barrel, center positive. The supplied low voltage adapter provides 12 vdc @ 3 amps.

Thus, you could power 4 CCR's with a single power supply that can provide 12vdc @ at least 12 amps. You could probably use the supplied power supply with mulitple CCR's, but you would have to keep the brightness way down, which would not be optimal.

The purpose of a weatherproof enclosure is to keep the water away from the electronics, while still allowing moisture to drain out the bottom. If it's mounted vertically, the small amount of moisture that could seep through the edges and back is insignificant.

It's generally a bad idea to have cables come into the top of anything. As an experienced roofer once told me, water tends to run downhill.

So...more than likely not all 4 CCR's will be on at the same time (at least in my application) so something like this would work? (couldn't find a 12 amp one...just this 7 amp)
