Upgrading to New Computer

Hey guys,

It's been about 5 years since I last purchased a new computer. I'm going shopping today and just wanted to get an idea of what I should look for in a computer and it's performance to LOR.

For a decent price ($400 to $600 range) what size/speed should I be looking for? I don't know half the crap they describe/install in these things so any help would be much appreciated.

Edit: what do you recommend?

Thanks in advance,

Tom

Anything you buy new should be more than adequate for LOR. LOR is not very intensive software. So maybe monitor size would be the most relevant thing that will affect your LOR computer satisfaction. A nice big monitor (23" or bigger) allows you to see a decent amount at one time. If you plan to work with HD video (such as videos of your display), then you might want for it to have an upgraded video card (AKA graphics card). HD video uses a lot of hard drive space over time (1-3GB per 30 minutes of video), so may want at least a 1TB (AKA 1000GB) hard drive (which may/should be standard now).

Oh, and one last thing with regards to LOR...don't get a Mac. :P

Nowadays, its silly not to get as much RAM as you can..and with Win 7, I believe that would be 4 GB if you go 32 bit, and then the sky's the limit (192 GB or something like that?) if you go 64.

But SFD is right, LOR itself is not really a gating factor for how powerful a machine you need.

Thanks a bunch for your input guys,

My computer I've had for many years is enough to do the job but bogs down (hesitates) a little when playing sequences with the animation screen. It seems worse as I add more channels.

I went with a

Gateway - Desktop / Intel® Core™ i3 Processor / 4GB Memory / 1TB Hard Drive
I got caught in the WOW factor and felt this should do the job for LOR and my other computer needs for years to come (hopefully). It might mean less spending with LOR this year but that's how "late sales" go I guess (money burning hole in pocket). I might still be able to get close to what I want/need when LOR has the sale.

I thought about a Laptop but wanted a larger screen and such.

Again, thanks for your input.

That should do the trick.

Thanks, and I did get a bigger monitor as well. Your advise made sense there too. My other monitor (20") is going for my security (Christmas) system.

Not to forget the MAC comment... never!!! :D That's IMO so don't throw rocks you MAC users. :P

Thanks again,

Tom

Tom remind me to show you my Alienware laptop at next years mini. If I wanted too I could create a lightshow on my keyboard. Every lightshow creator should have one!

Keith,
You're not going to make me wait that long to see it are you?

Maybe some time in the nearer future.

Yukon to Bricktown....20 minutes? And a free pass to the haunted house...priceless.

Oh man I wish I could.
My haunt (the Dungeon Haunted Ride) AND the Bricktown Haunted Warehouse are no more.
Because the building owner (that owned the haunted warehouse) was a stupid idiot, the fire marshals had enough of their B.S. and he elected not to get to code. So the fire marshals shut them down.
I on the other hand was perfectly up to code the the same idiot decided I didn't need some space I already had and rented it to another tenant, not to forget a bunch of repairs in the building I had to do in the past 7 years to even operate.
I got fed up and said enough is enough and moved everything out.
My other motivation is I lost my mom back in January and knew my dad would need a lot of my time from here on out. So it's better for him as well.
Alot has happened in the past 8 months of my life but I take it day by day.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your mom. I'm sure your dad is very happy to have you around. If you should need help of any kind, feel free to send me a pm.

I also lost my business because of someone else's mis-doings. Wish I had my bar back.

We should get together someday and throw down a couple of brews.
