PIR Motion Detector

Is the CTB16D or a CTB08D the only two boards that you can use the motion detector as a trigger? There are some effects I am wanting to do for Halloween that this would work great for but the two CTB16D boards I do have are mounted together in a box so that would not help me for what I need to do, but my PC boards are individually mounted so that is more of what I need but I dont know if they do accept external triggers from the motion detector.

Isn't a trigger a trigger no matter how it is activated?

Whether it is physically pushed by someone or "pushed" via motion?

Any PIR you buy should have normally open and normally closed set of contacts. all you need to do is power the PIR and connect to the right set of contacts to LOR. I'm thinking
LOR is going to want the normally open set so that when motion is detected it closes the switch and triggers the input, BUT I've never looked into triggers so I can't tell you for sure.

Okay...

I didn't find PIR in Mr. Bottomleys new glossary...

so whats a PIR?

Not directly. If all your controllers are connected to your computer, then your trigger can connect to the DC controllers and trigger the software to control your PC controllers. If your DC cards are running independant, then no, it won't work.

PIR is a motion detector, I don't remember what PIR stands for.

I bought a cheap "doorbell" style motion detector that uses 3 AA batteries. I took it apart, removed the chime and alarm sound circuits, and found that it has a normally open signal. I connect it to my CTB-16PC, using the +5V output from the header board to power it. It works fine, triggering a sequence that runs the fog machine.

By the way, the "Passive" in Passive InfraRed means that it does not emit infrared light, it just triggers when the infrared light it detects changes, because someone moves in front if it. (Humans and other warm-blooded animals emit infrared light.)

By contrast, an "Active" infrared detector is one that emits infrared light, bounces it off a reflector (usually red), and detects the return. These are usually used in a doorway and react instantly when something (warm blooded or not) interrupts the beam.

It has been taken care of.

Ok is this something that can be used as a security device when the show is not running IE: someone coming into your yard in the wee hours of the morning can you have a motion detector set up through the LOR and have an alarm or something go off inside your house to aleret you??

That would work. But you don't even need LOR. You could buy a DC buzzer or LED and run it from the same supply the motion detector uses. But you would need the normally open contacts (or a relay to invert the logic).

Just be aware that anything that emits heat and moves will trigger the alarm. The sensors I use for my security cameras / alarm will trigger when the neighbor's cat crosses our yard. We also have a large wind chime with a flat black surface that sets them off if it's in the sun with the wind blowing :?

Don,

A long time ago (before Stephen shared that great idea to use wire 1 and 2 for outside speakers) I thought of using the unused wires in the LOR network to create a loop to trigger an alarm. Now, with the use of the input triggers it actually includes the display.

Here's some simple details: First, many but not all of the LOR products feed through pins 1 and 2 of the 8 pin RJ45 jacks. So at the beginning of the network I created a cable that takes the associated wires out and connects them to an input on a controller header. I set that input to N/C and use it to trigger a Magic Toy. Downstream of that cable I only connect devices that feed through 1 and 2. At the end of this portion of the network I have a connector with 1 and 2 jumpered to short.

This closes the loop and holds the input high. The magic toy is a sequence that turns on everything in the display, along with four 500 Watt halogen floods on the roof powered by a hockey puck SSR controlled by a DIO channel, and all the X-10 controllers, one of which turns on a light by my bed... I wake up instantly. Anything could be added to make noise for those light sleepers in the group. It doesn't have to be a Magic Toy, it could be a trigger that activates an audio sequence that announces the fact that you are now awake and attempting to reload...

A break in the network is all it takes to set it off. Lotsa lights are the deterrent. This will be the very first year I place $3000+ of LOR products out on my front lawn. I'm confident the retired neighbors will watch during the day, this little trick will take care of the overnight.

Well this sounds great one thing, can you explain all of this in english as I am a computer idiot, I know enough to chit chat on the forum, do a lot of sequening and check my e-mails other than that I am not a great tech guy, 30 years in the window and door buisness along with home renovations, technical mumbo jumbo stymies me diagrams and photos do wonders for me but I am thinking of some kind of security system as you know I have cameras 3 of them I just am looking for something along the lines that you have spoke of Jeff I think this would work perfectly
