Phone Cable First?

Can phone cable be the first from the computer to controller? Would the distace be reduced? Is the cable loose?

I had a 50ft phone cable first in line last year. No problems. I used a phone cable because it fit thru the storm window without letting much air in.

I think the 100ft rule applies for either phone or Cat 5 to the first controller. (unless you are using USB)
