Audacity Question

I'm attempting to shorten a song and was curious if there's a way to blend/mold/overlap the cut part of a song? I've tried using the envelope tool to soften the existing part of song with the newly added portion, but it just seem really obvious that its cut... So I was just wondering if it's possible to create a better splice through Audacity or should I look into getting a different program???

I would appreciate any help with this.

Possibly you already tried this but have you added the part after the cut as a 2nd track (below the part before the cut) that way you can overlap the two slightly, with probably a slight fade out of the first and fade in of the 2nd. (Rather than butting the 2 parts end to end.)

Something kinda like this (this one doesn't have fades but just a pic I googled to show something similar):

I would use a fade down and a fade up and overlap the two at the area of the fades as Surfing4dough said.

Here is an example of the fades

Thanks Surfing and Paulanator!!!
No, I have not tried that. I did not know this was do-able... That looks promising for sure! That's exactly what I'd like to do!!
Now, when I play or edit a song it duplicates what ever I do in the first row (track) to the second row (track), they seem to mirror each other. How would I clear the contents of row/track 2 so I can enter my cut song into it??

Thanks for the assistance!!! ;)

Click on the down pointing arrow to the right of...audio tracks in the second track. It should give you options.

Sweet, this is starting to make sense! I'm just now trying this again... So what I was incorrectly referring to was the duplicates in track one. (See Picture with red arrows)
What is the purpose of this??? Here I was thinking this was 2 tracks but this is all one track...
Anyhow, I followed Stevens flow chart and created an "actual" second track and I am now able to cut and time shift..
SO THANK YOU ALL!!! This is beginning to work!!!

Ya, this works WAY better than I first thought... So I ended up making 4 tracks, cut and molded the song four times, and it sounds pretty dang good! All from the tips and tricks from you guys... I'm in business!!!! :):D THANKS!!!

I'm glad Audacity is working for you - I've always found it to be all the music editor I've needed, both for editing songs and creating/editing announcements.

Those tracks you refer to with the red arrows aren't duplicates of each other - look more closely - they're the right and left channels of a stereo recording.
