ok we have determined that the EDM will transmitt through walls now the only other question I had was do you hook it up to your computer the same way you would hook up a whole house transmitter I have a small transmitter that cost me 30 bucks I just plug into my headphone jack on my computer and it works fairly well but would like better distance so does the EDM plug into your headphone jack on your computer and work the same way as a whole house transmitter????? :P

Just watch how high the volume is set, because the transmitter is supposed to use line out power. Here is a cool tool for testing, so you don't overdrive the transmitter, hope it helps,

I found that using an in-line volume control device such as below worked well for in between my mini-director and EDM.

Will this work for any transmitter or just the EDM?

MikeH

I'd think it would work for any device that requires Line Out power levels. Since the LED is acting as a visual display of how much power your putting out from your headphone jack.

Bill thanks for the tip now all I have to do is get someone to solder this for me I haven't touched a solder gun for 37 years

update just ordered the EDM-LCD-RDS-EP

Just got mine in the mail today. Got the LCD RDS model. The wife works in production at an electronics company. She's gonna have one of the operators do the solder job. Buying them a lunch is cheaper than buying a good soldering iron. :D

Can't wait to give it a run this weekend.

No skill required for this soldering job. I don't solder, but even I could do it. It took twice as long for my cheapo soldering tool to heat up compared to the assembly.

This was just posted on the EDM Users Group:

Often people end up driving too high level audio into the EDM units. This causes terrible distortion on the receive side making users to think that they received a faulty unit.

Please remember that the EDM units require consumer level -10dBv line-level audio. The output from a MP3 player or PC sound card may be much too high for the EDM.

Simple rule of thumb: If your audio source is strong enough to power a set of headphones or earphones, the chances are very good that you will end up with distortion on the receiver side.

The simplest solution is to add a inline volume control to bring the range low enough for the EDM units to handle.

These are very cheap and comes with free shipping.

Since you have soldered before you will have no problems. I had never soldered before and got the 3 solder points soldered with no problems. It was not all that pretty, but it worked.

Hooking up the EDM to a computer is a little different than most transmitters that I have seen/used. As the EDM has a right and left RCA jack input. I see John posted a link to a connector that will work fine.

  • 3 months later...

Can someone tell me how the RDS works with the EDM-LCD-RDS-EP? How do you get the text you want into the unit?

Also, how do you control the freq, output level, etc? Through the LCD screen or do you have to use a screw driver like the FM25B?

Last question, can anyone tell me if the EDM-LCD-RDS-EP performs better (in terms of clarity and signal range) than the Ramsey FM25b or FM30?

Thanks in advance for educating me.

Take a look at the back few pages of the manual.

http://www.edmdesign.com/docs/EDM-TX-RDS.pdf

You'll need to download the MiniRDS software for use with this unit...

I received my EDM-TX-LCD-RDS in the mail this week and have read in the instructions to use an "acid-free electronic-grade solder". I went to the local Radio Shack where they have...

1. lead free solder
2. silver solder
3. rosin core solder

Non of the choices said anything about being "acid free". Does anyone know which one of these solders would work best?

Thanks,
