Bingo!

The approach I take often results in a mix of the options, and then some.

Depending on the music, or even just a section of the music, I might sequence vertically, a few beats at a time. Or I might finish a phrase or section, or even the whole thing with one element. Then, too, rarely am I working with just one element -- more like multiple elements that are related.

And I'll sequence a song until it gives me fits or just isn't working right. Then I go do something else (sequencing or not) and come back to the first sequence later.

I don't have a hard and fast rule about the approach -- the only hard rule I have is that "timing is to be very tight". Even if I fade something up or down (which I often do) it is with great consideration of the beat and how it relates musically. I'm anal like that.

Actually, "all of the above" only half describes my methods and habits also. I flit around from song to song. Another manifestation of my ADD I'm sure, but at any given time I have 20+ songs I'm actively working on, and another couple dozen or so that I use as fall-backs if I can't get into any on the active list on a given night. Some nights I feel like working on my own display, some nights I feel like working on this customer's or that customer's... some nights I feel like working on the CCRs or feel like working on the spiral tree or the face... I just go with what interests me that night, and if nothing interests me I take a break.

My bad, thought I had checked the multible choice option. Didn't think about "all of the above" option.
