caniac
Got my frames made for "Thriller" and should have them covered in cattle wire shortly. When it comes to rope light it seems i have a few options. given that this is for a short run display I am thinking incandescent. some of the sites i have seen, i can get a 150ft. roll or get pre-made sections. How hard is it for a newbie to make their own sections? The price difference seems substantial. thoughts?
George Simmons
I vote for make-your-own. I make custom rope light lengths, and for power cords I use the male ends of the extension cords I've cut up for controller dongles. Basically, you need to tin the wires of the power cord and using an awl (or something similar) enlarge the openings at the end of your cut piece of rope light so you can push the tinned ends in to make connection with the wires that run the length of the rope light.BE ADVISED that this technique DOES NOT provide for fused protection of the lights. I've electrocuted no one, including myself, but your mileage may vary. Do not even CONSIDER doing something this stupid if you aren't connected to GFCI. Dan Ancona
Or, going along with what George here posted, instead of tinning the wires, I've used small nails to insert into the rope light, then solder to the pigtails. Secure with tape or better yet, shrink tube.
james campbell
I had an idea for doing homemade rope light,I was going to use clear incandescents and buy clear tubing. this way you can buy varying lengths of lights and not have to worry about shocking yourself
Paul Roberson
I have also cut my own rope light lengths. However I vote for just buying however many power cords (the ones for rope lights) you need. They are not that expensive and go together very quickly and everything has fuses as it should.I have gotten all my rope lights and rope light accessories from http://mengmengusainc.com/
