Very new at this and was wondering where to start. Is it more important to get a lot of channels? Also I want to use LED lights is there a brand or style that works better. any help would be great

First off you need to decide what you want to make blink, then take it from there. On LED's the sky is the limit on that one.

jimswinder
Yep...I thought 16 channels would be plenty my first season...ended up with 48...Second season had 528...I went with all LED's as I did not already have a static display. So like the others have said, depends on your budget...also depends if your existing electrical load can handle incandescents (larger load)...if not, you may be looking at a big electrical bill to update your service. So, lots of things to consider...Figure out your display and try and decide how many channels you will need...then buy a few extra...As for LED's, it REALLY pays to buy after the first of the year when the companies have their Pre-Order Sales (Creative Displays, Inc and Magic In The Sky). The MOST important thing is to have fun and involve the whole family. If you are not having fun, or spending too much money (and/or time), then it becomes a job...Remember, it is just a hobby...your family and friends should be your obsession... james campbell
I have seen some great 16 channel displays on you tube. depending on what you already have you may be able to hook multiple things on one channel.I decided to leave my stuff from my current display and make all new stuff for lor. you see how fast arches and mega trees and so eat up channels. i am only doing one color, but many do three or four maybe more,. so a 3 color 7 channel arch would eat up 21 channels. in the end realize you will get addicted spend lots of time smiling about what you have created.just have fun

As long as it is LED it is my understanding you don't have overload issues as you would incandescent.
