George Simmons
Last season I had a critter (or something) sever a wire in the second half of a fifty light set of full wave M5 LEDs from CDI. The wire was cut in the second half of the set and only that half went dark - the first twenty five bulbs still lit, apparently normally, for the rest of the season. Is there any negative effect on the 25 remaining lights from using them in this manner? I've since spliced the wire and the entire set seems to light normally. If there's no harm to the half that lights, there are a couple places where I'd like to have only 25 bulbs or so and I'd consider sacrificing half of a set and avoid having to deal with with adding resistors or submitters or all that what-not. And since this occurs in 50's would the same trick with a 70 ct string result in a working 35?
ken collins
George, I had the same thing happened to a set of 70's. spliced and the string all lit again. I have made strings of 35's from 70's after that experience.
George Simmons
Are you working with half wave or full wave LEDs? Are you able to use both halves of the 70 ct string for 35 light sets? If yes, other than adding a plug did you need to add anything else to the second half for them to work?
cmoore60
George,I have had a few strings where a single LED had been damaged and 1/2 of the string is out. I would think that as long as your "shortened" string has one of the "warts" on both ends you will be fine for this to work correctly.Incidently I have been able to repair these single out LED units. The sockets although they look sealed can indeed be opened up and swapped. Just have to make sure that you get the actual LED install in proper polarity.Chuck
Steven
I also had half of a 100-bulb LED string go bad, so I cut it off and used the working lights for the star on the tree. The bulbs are wired in series-parallel, so it's really 25 pairs in series. I cut 6 bulbs off the discarded part, added a 100Ω resistor, and hooked them up to my (12VAC) landscape lighting. It still works great.
