Thoughts on how to open and close a gate with LOR?

Hello!

I have a gate that can be opened in one of three ways:

1) Infrared Remote
2) Instant Release Button
3) Hold Button

Options 1 and 2 open the gate for a certain amount of time, after which the gate closes automatically.

Option 3 keeps the gate open until the button depresses.

I don't know what would happen if I held down the infrared remote for a long period of time.

Thoughts? The gate is down a bit from the actual show and some of the buttons are wired into the house.

Thanks!

Hello. It sounds to me like what you want to do is use option 2 - when you press the button, the gate opens, person comes through, gate closes. So...my suggestion would be to use a DIO32 ($150) with the 8 relay daughterboard ($86) OR....you could go cheaper ( and more DIY) with the ServoDog ($90) controlling a relay. In either case, NO contacts on a relay would connect to the 2 wires for the Button (in scenario #2). With the ServoDog, the Coil of the relay would connect to an output. You would likely have to use a SSR due to the power restrictions of the ServoDog. Also, you would want this output to be momentary - don't fire it for too long.

If you're looking for the gate to open when a car drives up - there are other options out there such as driveway sensors used in home automation.

Hope that helps and doesn't sound too confusing!

I would kick the wife out the passenger door and tell her to open it. :D
