OK we have talked about this lots, I am relentless when it comes to saving my work after I have sequenced for a while by putting everything on my memory stick, well this morning my wife washed my shirt that I forgot had my memory stick in the top pocket, as it turned out it doesn't matter if you use tide it will not get the stains out LOL the stick is fine, but just a reminder to all at this time of the year to save your work after you have sequenced for a while, you do not want to lose everything you have worked so hard for. :P

or you can buy and use an external hard drive. I've lost all my information on my laptop 3 times. including pictures and video's. if I didnt have the external< i might have lost everything.
it less than 100 bucks for 320gig, at staples.

Whats that worth if your pc crashes, and you lost your sequence in Oct?

As has been mentioned a few times on the forum, there are a few off-site backup solutions that folks can utilize. The advantage of an off-site backup is valuable in cases of theft, fire, or hardware failure.

Here are a few options that you may wish to explore.

DropBox - Downloading and using DropBox will allow you to backup your files off site in real time. Visit the DropBox site, and create an account and download their utility. It will create a "DropBox" folder on your PC. Anything that you write to the folder will be uploaded to your account. Computer failure? No worry, your data is still on the DropBox servers. (For the technical people, yes, it's encrypted before it's sent.) They give you 2GB for free. Want an extra 250MB? Use this link (Full disclosure: I get an extra 250MB as well.)

CrashPlan - There are free and paid versions of this program. The free version will let you backup to other CrashPlan users/computers for free. The paid version will give you the option to backup to the CrashPlan cloud. (Techies: CrashPlan (the free version) uses 128-bit Blowfish to encrypt your files. CrashPlan+ (Paid version) uses 448-bit Blowfish encryption) Download and learn more at CrashPlan.com.

It's just like leasing a car. you keep paying. but you dont own it.

Actually, I would say that 1TB for $99 or less is pretty standard any more. ($59 if you shop around --note additional $10 coupon listed if by 4/4=$49)

Here are some deals though:

1.5TB for $70 (shipped)

I have been using a memmory stick for two years now with no problems, however I am only saving my sequences and my music, for those that need to save everything going these other routes are a very viable option, I may have to look into this for photos and things of that nature, thanks for the responses, we can only hope no one loses any of their work because they weren't interested in saving it. thus in turn asking us to share all of our hard work with them when the season is upon us. ;)

Don, if you could find a way to prevent moochers from doing that - I'd nominate you for hero of the year...

Hey Don, thanks for the reminder, it's been awhile since I did an external save. I've been so busy, it's one of those things I forget to do. I always hit the save button when I walk away from the computer, just in case someone does a reboot on me.

You could just pretend that I am a hero and have everyone send one CCR each that would make me feel better. LOL ;)

No problem a simple reminder by all of us wouldn't hurt once in a while I would be sick if I lost my medley that I have been working on since the begining of Feb I only have 30 seconds left to finish it off and today is the day, glad I could at least remind one of my fellow LOR forum members to save their work. ;)

Very true. Nothing in life is free. External hard drives are cheap these days and can be used to backup data very easily.

But, like you say, what if your PC crashes in October? What if you get a virus that wipes out all data on all drives. What if your home is broken into, and all computer equipment is stolen? What if your house burns down?

I'm only mentioning the off-site backups for those who wish to do even more to protect their data in the event of something catastrophic. (And, for the record, I too back up to local on-site storage. However, I utilize off-site storage as well.)

Once in a while I also burn pics and sequences and some video onto a DVD and just store it in my desk at work (in addition to my 2 external drives). Easy, fast, and cheap, and preserves the files in case of theft, fire, virus, tsunami, plague, etc. I work with a lot of HD video at home, and I am finding that that creates a more difficult situation for backing up. Often dealing with 2-4GB video file sizes which pile up quickly. I like online storage for some things, but even with "turbo" ISP speeds, upload speed is fair, so even backing up pictures online is tedious at times--usually set it to run for when I go to bed.
