Al Dube Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 Hey Guys,I'm not new to LOR, this was my 3rd year... So, I want to expand and try out some of the neet stuff I read that you guys are doing, but, is there either an on-line or my preference, a hard copy software manual for LOR... I tried the one on there site called S2 help manual but I can't get it to save properly therefore I can't read it.. SOoooo Please help, trying to get a good head start on 2011..Thanks, "Al"
bob Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 When you say "I can't get it to save properly", I'm guessing that you actually see a message saying "Navigation to the webpage was cancelled" when you open the file. If so, please see the note entitled "Having trouble reading our downloaded help files?", at the bottom of this page:http://www.lightorama.com/SoftwareDownloadPage.htmlAn alternative to the suggestion there would be to download the PDF version of the help file instead of the CHM version. You can get either one from that same page (look in the "PDF Based" column instead of the "Windows Based" column). Also, if you have installed LOR, the help file is installed with it, so you shouldn't have to download it in the first place. You can access it in a bunch of different ways, but for example you can get it through the Sequence Editor's "Help" menu.
bob Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 Oh, also, you can view a web version of the latest help file here:http://www.lightorama.com/help/And we have a bunch of other documents (other than the help file) that you can download here:http://www.lightorama.com/Documentation.html
jabbusch Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 Al,I just tried to download that same "300+ page manual" and had an issue with it as well; I'm not sure if you experienced the same problem, but the two files presented there appear to both be the same CHM "help file". This is the Microsoft Compiled HTML help file format: basically a collection of Web pages which you can access via a "hyperlink" table of contents. Incidentally, there appeared to be a fault in those documents since the TOC links did not seem to display the associated Web page on my PC (although I have not isolated the cause for this yet).I have wanted an actual manual for the LOR products, and particularly for the software products, for some time. I did have an exchange with LOR (Dan I think) some time last year asking if they had a PDF (or similar) document format which was easily printable but I came away from that exchange with the impression that the LOR folks do not feel it is needed.I hope that there is a version of their S2 software manual which is now available in a format, other than CHM, which will be easily printable. Please let me know if you learn of one.John
Greg Young Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 I printed out the help files that came with S2 when it was first released. I forget how many pages the manual was, but it was complete.Obviously there is some redundancy as it is a help file, not a manual per se, but it really allowed me to scan through the software features, and learn a few tricks I wasn't aware of, at that time. You can always print your help file..Greg
jabbusch Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 Greg,Greetings from the Tar Heel state! Yes, I did something very like that a few years ago too. But, I really would like to have a manual in a more useful format such as the PDF. I guess it's an occupational hazard; I'm a lifelong geek, both professionally and by avocation and I really just expect to have the reference materials and not simply interactive HTML help files. Also, the document links to which Bob directed Al were the ones I just tried and, as I indicated in my response to Al, both links pointed to the same CHM file neither of which appeared to function properly: the TOC hypertext links apparently lost their association with their respective HTML content pages. As an engineer I won’t blame the downloaded CHM files yet since I have not done any trouble shooting, but that’s where my suspicions are centered at the moment. In any case, I would really prefer the more versatile and commonly used PDF (or similar) document format. Ah well, one day maybe.John
cmoore60 Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 What is wrong with the PDF help file found at the link the Bob posted?I have found this to be most useful to browse through to answer questions.Chuck
JBullard Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 I just downloaded the PDF file for ver 2.9.4 with no problem. Nothing wrong with the file, works fine
jabbusch Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 Oops yes, we’re speaking at cross purposes folks; I downloaded from the links pointing to the CHM files: not the PDF files.Sorry for the confusionJohn
