caniac
This past season I did a mega tree with rope lights, they were the store brand from Lowe's and though they were ok for the most part I just wasn't blown away. they were the incandescent type. I found a site online (might have actually found it here) that sent me a small section to play with of the LED rope lights. I like the brightness but has anyone else tried them?My biggest problem with my previous attempt is that sections "burned out" within the rope light strand and given that my mega tree was 20feet+ tall, taking down and replacing just didn't seem like a viable option. Has anyone used LED rope lights and what is the general thought? Are there better lighting options without regressing to old technology? I am all about making the sky above my house glow but don't want to line the pockets of the power company!!

Paul Roberson
I have used LED rope light on our house around windows and roof. I can't imagine doing a mega tree with it as directional as it is.
scubado
I have one flowerbed that has a cool white led rope light in it that's had several months of use with no dead bulbs yet. My other flowerbeds have hand made WRGB led tubes that are much brighter than the led rope light. This Spring I plan to add a second led rope light in the first one to brighten it up more. khawes
Finally got my poorly shot videos on-line, but they show a 1/2 megatree made form rope lights. My ropes have alternating red & green incans and I hand wired each rope's reg & green lights to separate channels. I did loose two sections on different runs during my setup (between wiring and attaching them to the PVC) but none died in the winds we had.I lost one bulb this year, I'm worried enough that I'm going to buy m5 led strings as a backup just incase I fire it up next year and one is dead.anyway here's my videos: http://www.youtube.com/user/ChristmasOutLoud

Thomas M. Fazekas
I too have used multi-color rope lights to line my front sidewalk. I really like the effect. However, this is the second year I lost a 18 inch segment in one of my rope lights. I've seen places where you can buy the splices to fix them. They seem to be OK for the display it's when I take them down and recheck for the end of season, I find the burned out segment. I was really careful taking them down this year but to no avail.Has anybody repaired these (Rope Lights) and what was your success rate ?Thanks...... caniac
here is my mega tree (20ft flag pole, star, rope lights). the big issue i had with the rope lights was having sections burn out. trying to figure out if led rope lights are a good replacement for next year or just get a ton of standard led's. (At least all of the LED rope light I have seen)You would have to have a way to make the rope light face your viewers and not allow the rope to twist. The LED rope light I used on my windows and roof were put in 'rope light channel'. It was easy to install the LED rope in the channel making the LEDs face the viewers.
