Tom Clapper Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 I have a wire framed reindeer that I want to transform into rudolph. Ok yes that just means I want to add a single red light to is nasal area. My question is can I take an old set if incandesant C9's and cut it down to a single bulb. Is there any problems with doing that. I have a pretty good knowledge of electrical just haven't messed with cutting strings before. Also I have been reading on here that alot of you use spt wire for extension cords. Which wire do you prefer? Can I used lamp cord from a box store? If I am correct lamp cord is not outdoor rated but what difference is there between that and an ungrounded christmas stores spt wire. Thanks for any info.
Christopher2113 Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 i was looking around to buy some spt wire and stopped in one of my hardware stores and they said spt wire is the same as lamp wire i ended up buying my spt wire from christmaslightshow.comspt wire is also going to be the same wire as your c7 or c9 light wireyou can cut them down to one light or order you some light sockets and wire from chrismaslightshow.com just to make one light for the nosealso make sure you order the correct fittings spt1 and spt2 the only difference is that the spt2 has thicker insulation around the wirei hope this helps you outanyone else feel free to chime in anytime i am just giving my .02Christopher
R Weiland Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 Yes, you can use a single C-9 bulb as they run off of 120V.As for SPT-1 vs SPT-2, folks use them both. The SPT-2 has thicker insulation. From an electrical point of view No significant difference between SPT wire and the two conductor wire on store bought lights. You can check this link out or search the sight for additional SPT wire discussions.http://lightorama.mywowbb.com/forum25/25514.html
redsea300 Posted January 16, 2011 Posted January 16, 2011 I used a exterior socket with a 75w red flood light. It works great.
PaulXmas Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 I used a C9 incandesant (red of course) on a wire frame deer to represent Rudulph.I used the first socket of the string and cut it (used electric tape to cover the wires).http://vimeo.com/17760380 crappy video but you can see the single light.
wallleyes Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 I used one of them little round plastic coke bottles and painted it red and inserted a blowmold light and clip into it.
Tom Clapper Posted January 17, 2011 Author Posted January 17, 2011 Thanks, a friend of mine had an old c9 string I got for FREE cut it and sealed the wires and ACE had a four pack of red bulbs for 90 cents. Put it in the deer tonight and it looks great!! Thanks for the advise.
