Wide Angle Penetration

I figured that headline would get your attention. Now get your mind out of the gutter. I'm referring to a Ventures song that I posted last week. Since then, I've gotten a wide-angle lens for the Flip and thought I'd post a link for those who are interested in seeing the difference.

If you liked the version from last week this one shows a lot more of the yard. For those who might be considering getting one of these new-fangled affordable HD cameras, you can compare the regular and wide-angle videos taken from almost exactly the same spot.

shfr26; Flash Player comes in several versions. Adobe looks to see what operating system it thinks you have, and it tries to detect which browser you are using. The version is different for Chrome and Firefox. I have no idea but that could be the problem.

George; It looks like you are getting about 1/3 more area with your wide angle lens. Looks good. About how tall are your mini trees and your arches. I want to add arches next year and was concerned that setting them up behind my mini trees would be a problem. However yours show up great, that's why I ask.

Awesome George as always. How many channels are you running on one light pole? I also just bought the wide angle lens for my flip, makes a huge difference.

Bruce - they advertise the lens at .45x so you're right on. The mini trees are 32" tomato cages. In the current video they're actually sitting up to six inches off the ground after we dug them out and stood them back up following their getting buried by the snow plow. The ends of the arches are 7'4" apart, which was determined by how they needed to be in order to fit eight of them (plus the poles) across the space I had. That resulted in them being 3'5" tall at the center. My front yard is quite shallow and sits about 2' above street level so I'm pretty limited in what I can do out front because there's no depth of field to work with. Next year, for instance, I'm going to nestle the rope light fans under the three arches on each end of the array instead of where they are this year. By the time I saw everything lit up, and saw the videos, the ground was frozen and things are where they are this time. But I would have already moved them if I could. As it is, I had to reduce and/or eliminate a lot of fan action in this yard because from the street level (lower than the camera angle) it just gets way too busy sometimes.

Donny - the poles are nine channels each.

With that title I expected to see someone
"Sitting on the curb, and licking themself" :(

This version of video really shows your display well, looking forward to the next one.
It is a work of art in motion.

Pretty interesting difference on the wide angle lens (as profound as the previous non-flip/flip comparison). Where did you buy the lens? I see that Flip started putting the lens directly on their site as an accessory. But I thought I have previously seen them on ebay. What route did you go, and which did you get? Price (if you don't mind)?

I don't frequent Ebay so I didn't even know they were for sale there. Bummer. I got mine directly from the Flip site. $49.95.

Can you confirm that this is the same model number:

They don't list the actual model on the flip site, but I think it is the same. (from Flip: http://store.theflip.com/en-us/products/Product.aspx?SKU=A3P0007)

I agree, and I'm still under what I spent for a lesser non-HD camera a year ago. If this Flip does as well in daylight as it does at night I'll be as pleased with it as I ever need to be.

The only complaint that I have is that the battery pack only lasts about 20 minutes when it's near zero outside. As it turns out, that's about as long as I last also, so it's a good fit, but I hope the battery time increases when it's warmer.

I think it is great during the day, especially outside. We love ours. Had a blast with it at the ocean this summer. Much more convenient than the regular camcorder (haven't used that since bought the Flip this summer). Occasionally a tad of blu if zoomed in all the way (if displayed on a large TV), but that is expected since it is digital zoom rather than optical zoom (which is probably the only weakness of the camera).

FYI, a couple cheap accessories I bought that have worked well.

Skin (perfect fit)

Case (perfect fit even with the above skin on, and good protection)

HDMI cable to connect the Flip directly to a LCD/HD TV for direct viewing of videos directly from the cam:

Wall charger (convenient when traveling and don't have USB to charge):
