Summons for christmas light display

What a crock of ****! I could maybe understand if there was a sidewalk that she was covering with her decorations. Also I have NEVER heard of outdoor extension cords needing to be inspected?! (I hope the city got their lights inspected on their gazebo and C-mas tree) I'm thinking the city is hoping that she gives in and I hope she fights it.

I used to work in that town, I think they are being totally unreasonable.

If everyone had to get electrical inspectors to inspect Christmas lights, I bet almost none would pass. The people who put up large displays are much more careful with the electric than the people who only put up a few decorations.
We are obsessed and would never want the show to fail from faulty wiring, or God forbid someone got hurt. We take far more precautions than the average home owner.

At my home in Minnesota, I did get in trouble for having my lights and blow molds too close to the street. There is an imaginary line about 15 feet in from the street that separates my yard from the towns. 3 years ago the town made me remove everything from that 15 foot section. That's why now I do a line of 1 foot or smaller blow molds at the edge of where i am allowed to put them.

As for others, I know http://www.holdman.com/christmas/ actually stopped and moved his display in 2008 because of problems with the community.

That really sucks. Just another example of government poking its nose in where it isn't needed.

I'm just wrapping up a tussle (hopefully) with the City of Clearwater. In my case it's about traffic safety cones. I borrowed some from the City last year to create a safe pedestrian lane in front of both properties. Worked great so I asked for them again this year. One of the Council members - the one who unseated me four years ago in fact - has been playing petty "gotcha" games ever since. Not a problem - my IQ is probably about 50 points higher than his so I'm not worried. Amused or annoyed is more like it.

But this time he complained that pulling the cones back against the curb (like I did last year) wasn't good enough and that they were interfering with people trying to park. (Which actually happens - probably in a typical year we have eight or maybe nine cars park on our side of the street on this end of the block.) So the City Administrator, sucking up for a raise no doubt, had the maintenance people come by and pick them up.

A client of mine runs a big construction outfit and he brought some cones for me to use the same day. I called every other Council member, the acting Mayor and the newspaper. I wrote a scathing letter to the editor challenging the Council to have the city attorney send me a letter demanding that I cease and desist trying to protect the kids' lives that they don't seem to care about. I haven't heard another word...

George - if it flows anyway like "what not to say to a drunk" thread, that would have been a great piece of work too.

The 2008 NEC (National Electric Code) says pg 70-502 article 590.3 (:D 90 days. Temporary electric power and lightning installations shall be permitted for a period not to exceed 90 day for holiday decorative lighting and similar purpose.
That is the only code applied to Christmas Lights. I am a General Contractor and have taken a few code classes. I have many friends that are building inspectors. They all tell me they do not look at Christmas lights or give out permits for the displays.

Other articles I have read say the homeowner installed outlets in the right-of-way. That is definitely a no-no but easily solved, remove them and run extension cords. The bigger issue is the neighbor(s) who are raising a fuss about it. Most of those arguments do not end well for the display/display owner.
