javerill Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 I discovered on two of my boards I have a loose cat5 connector. I use both of them to daisy chain my connectors. I tried the phone line but that wasn't any help.I did put one at the end of the chain so I only need to get one fixed. Could someone help?Jim
Guest guest Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 what do you need help with? someone to replace it for you? or??
Denise Brunner Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 I also have one that works sometimes, have to reposition the blk connector and then it will be OK for a while. After the season I will have to open it up to see what is going on.... unless it totally stops working
gizmomkr Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 You should be able to make the other "bad unit" first in the chain.Use whatever Cat-5 connector is GOOD to connect to your RS485 adapter. Then go from the telephone connector on that same unit to the telephone connector on the second unit. From the second unit, Use cat-5 connector to go to the 3rd unit.I THINK the pins are wired slightly different on the phone connector so you cant go phone connector to cat-5Other than that - you need someone who can re-solder that board for you. I'm sure LOR will do it, but I also read they are about 2 weeks behind for repairs right now.
Dennis Cherry Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 Look at the 8 wires inside the black connectors. are the wires in alignment with each other? Are they staggered in depth? If so the connector is bad now. This happens trying to get booted cat 5/6 plugs out of the connectors in cold weather. You need to replace them, call LOR for replacements.
ErnieHorning Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 As a temporary work around if you don’t have time to fix it right now, you can connect it as the last controller in the network chain. Just use the connector that’s still good. The pin connections are the same on both connectors.
javerill Posted November 17, 2010 Author Posted November 17, 2010 So if I connect my first controller with a cat5 cable, I should be able to use the phone jack to connect to the second one?Do the controllers need to be the same type? I tried earlier today and went from a 16 channel to an 8 channel and the red light went out. It did start blinking again when I unplugged the cable.
rgardner518 Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 Thats why you should have, or start using the (RJ45-ECS Ethernet Connector System)http://www.balticnetworks.com/rj45-ecs-ethernet-connector-system-weatherproof-and-outdoor.htmlIt outs little to NO strain on the solider connectors, and prevents issues later. Max-Paul Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 I dont know how the rest of you all mount or leave you boxes on the ground. In my case I had angle iron welded to a 12 X 12 plate and I drilled and tapped then mounted my box to this after I have pounded the stakes into the ground.Ok, now to what I wanted to say. I made my Ethernet cords a little long. Long enough that I can do a overhand knot around the stake before taking the cord into the box. Thus if the Ethernet cord is tripped on the shock ends where the cord wraps around the stake.Moral of the story if you will let me use that phrase, is this. Secure the cable so that it can not pull on connector on the board. This connector is not made to take any kind of pull on it.
javerill Posted November 17, 2010 Author Posted November 17, 2010 well the RJ45-ECS Ethernet Connector System would have been an excellent idea and I will have to look into it for next year. But about this year....

Maybe you had 2 conductor phone cable. trying something with 4 wires.Jeff has some great info in this thread - http://lightorama.mywowbb.com/forum76/17805-1.html
