JTowbin
Hey guys. With Halloween coming around the corner I've been finalizing my show. Last night I plugged in the USB 485 to the computer (vista) and it said it could not recognize the adapter. I tried everything! Reinstalling the drivers, restarting the computer, changing the cord that attaches to the converter. Nothing works. Can anyone help or is it time for me to get a new USB-485?Happy Halloween,Joe
-klb-
You downloaded the drivers directly from ftdichip.com as directed on page 12 of the adapter set up guide? (found on the Lightorama.com support page)If you plugged in the adapter before installing the drivers, you may have to work to fully extricate the windows drivers, so that you can install the proper drivers before plugging the device back in..Also, if possible test the install and device against another PC, so you can determine if it is a bad adapter... JTowbin
I actually tried that and it worked on another computer. You think its the drivers? It was working on COM4 but randomly halfway through a show it stopped working and wont recognize the adapter.
-klb-
If it were me, knowing that it shows up on a different PC, I would investigate the drivers more.. Also, use the com ports control panel app, to see if it is showing up on a different port unexpectedly.
Max-Paul
I might be barking up the wrong tree, but what do you guys think about this. Go into the control panel, then System and then Hardware Devices. Click on your USB interfaces and make sure that none of them can power down to conserve power. I dont know where I go from there. And paul I couldnt check to see if they were conserving power. im on vista
-klb-
Hmm. If you have a built in modem, it may be com1, but I'm not sure what would be using it already..Also, the USB485 should appear and disappear from the list if you plug it in, and unplug it with only a few seconds to refresh...Power saving might be a good place to look if it seems to randomly disappear, but I would expect the device would still show up after a reboot...Check that the USB port is working normally, with something else like a mouse plugged in.. See if there are any unrecognized devices showing up in your device tree. And this late in the game, give LOR a call, and see if they can help you... You don't have time to spare for Halloween any more.

I dont know where I go from there.Keep in mind that only one LOR program can use the serial port at a time. If you have shows enabled or the sequence editor open, the hardware utility will not be able to access the port.

With serial devices, you can only have one program accessing the serial port at a time. Unlike ethernet which can have several programs accessing a device.
